Manchester United star Donny van de Beek will find it 'difficult' to break into the starting line-up after he recovers from his injury at Old Trafford, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has been unable to call upon the midfielder for lengthy spells since he took over following the conclusion of last season.

What's the latest news involving van de Beek?

Van de Beek only returned to Manchester United during the summer, having spent the second half of last season on loan with Premier League rivals Everton, but it seems his days at Old Trafford could be numbered.

That is because, according to 90min, the 25-year-old has been granted permission to head through the exit door once the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year.

The report suggests a number of Premier League clubs, along with PSV Eindhoven and former employers Ajax, hold an interest and van de Beek - a 19-cap Netherlands international - is likely to leave on loan.

Serie A giants Inter Milan are reportedly mulling over whether to offer the outcast an escape route, while transfer insider Dean Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that ‘a queue of clubs’ will be looking to strike a deal in January.

Van de Beek has been on the sidelines for more than a month with an injury, meaning his most recent appearance came during Manchester United's win over Liverpool in August.

What has Dharmesh Sheth said about van de Beek?

Sheth believes van de Beek's injury could not have come at a worse time and, having already fallen down the pecking order before the lay-off, it will be tough to reignite his Manchester United career.

The journalist feels the Dutchman will struggle to move into the forefront of ten Hag's plans despite playing under his fellow countryman 110 times during their spell together at Ajax.

Sheth told GIVEMESPORT: "It looks difficult for him. The injury has come at a really, really bad time for him.

"If it was going to work for Donny van de Beek under any manager, you'd have to say it would have been under Erik ten Hag. But, towards the start of the season, he wasn't starting games even under ten Hag.

"Now he's injured and he's got four midfielders in there that seem to be ahead of him."

Will van de Beek definitely leave Manchester United in January?

It is not a foregone conclusion as van de Beek's £120,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2025 and Manchester United also have an option to extend the agreement by a further 12 months.

The Red Devils forked out up to £40million for his services and, although his time in the Premier League has not gone to plan, the club will be desperate for the deal to eventually pay off.

Manchester United will not want to sell van de Beek on the cheap and ten Hag even blocked a summer return to Ajax, so there is still a distinct possibility that the outcast will be at Old Trafford by the time the winter window slams shut.
