Manchester United fans have a new hero. He goes by the name of Lisandro Martinez.

The defender is quickly becoming a fans' favourite at Old Trafford for his no-nonsense defending.

The centre back arrived from Ajax for £56.7 million in the summer and there were initial concerns regarding his lack of height in the Premier League.

Those fears were only exacerbated when United lost to Brighton and Brentford in the opening two matches. At 4-0 down at half time against Brentford, Martinez was hauled off at half time.

The turnaround has been remarkable.

During United's 1-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday, there were chants of 'Argentina, Argentina' simply because of Martinez's incredible performance.

Man Utd supporters may have feared the worst with Martinez having to come up against West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca but he handled the Italian brilliantly.

Martinez is already such a fan favourite that a group of United supporters have created an absolutely massive banner for him.

Nicknamed 'The Butcher' due to his aggressiveness, the flag features a big butcher’s knife on the background of the Argentinian national flag.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the flag has been banned from Old Trafford for its violent nature.

But Martinez is a big fan, posting his love for the flag on social media and writing: 'Incredible.'

Gary Neville was loving Martinez

Gary Neville on co-commentary duty on Sky Sports was waxing lyrical about Martinez throughout the match.

"Harry Maguire has to get used to playing on the right side of Manchester United's defence because there is no way he's going to get his spot on the left side," Neville said during commentary. "Lisandro Martínez has made that position his own.

"He has been Man Utd's best player by a mile, Martinez," Neville later added. "The Man Utd fans are singing for him."

Ian Wright and Owen Hargreaves sing Martinez's praises

Meanwhile, Ian Wright reserved some very special praise for Martinez.

"He’s got defensive quality that I haven’t seen at Manchester United for a while," Wright told Premier League Productions after the game. "Not only his positioning but he passes the ball through the lines. He’s exactly what they’ve needed.

"Someone that doesn’t mess about, there’s no thrills with him it’s just bang, good challenges. He’s been a really, really good signing. I didn’t think he was going to be as good as he’s been."

Fellow pundit Owen Hargreaves added: "He’s added so much to the team. He’s given them so much. His performance in this game had a big impact on Harry Maguire as well. There were so many positives for United today but defensively Martinez was fantastic. Erik ten Hag will be really pleased."
