Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is under consideration for England's World Cup squad, claims journalist Simon Phillips.
The 23-year-old has impressed in this early part of the season, and it looks like he could be rewarded for that with a seat on the plane to Qatar.
What is the latest news involving Chalobah?
Chalobah was recently praised by Chelsea manager Graham Potter for the impact he has made since coming into the team.
"I’ve been very impressed from day one," the Blues boss said earlier this month. "He wasn’t in for the first couple of games but acted perfectly: trained really well, very professional, very determined. He’s an impressive character, very focused on his football.
"He’s a bit of a soldier. He’s played in all the games. We’re having some problems in terms of availability for players, but he’s stood up, stood in and he’s performing at a really good level."
Chalobah was unable to prevent his side from losing against Brighton over the weekend, scoring an own goal in the humiliating 4-1 loss at the Amex, but the centre-back and Chelsea will have the chance to quickly put that behind them when they take on Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Wednesday.
What has Phillips said about Chalobah and England?
Phillips has told GIVEMESPORT that Chalobah has caught Gareth Southgate's attention ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: "Should he be a late consideration for a World Cup spot? He should be, and I'm told he is.
"As with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Chalobah brings versatility and can play anywhere across the back as well as in midfield, so that will count for something when Gareth Southgate is making his selections. Chalobah is certainly not being ignored right now."
Should Chalobah be under consideration for the England squad?
With the form he is in, yes. Chalobah, who has a CIES Football Observatory value of £34m, also has a lot of experience playing in a back three, something Southgate often utilises.
All in all, the Chelsea man would be a logical selection, especially if Kyle Walker is unable to travel to Qatar following his groin surgery.
It probably will not come to that, with Walker optimistic about his chances of recovering in time for the tournament.
"I just feel I can do this," the Manchester City defender said (via BBC Sport). "I am going to have to be patient with it. There will be bumps in the road but hopefully, come the selection, I'm included."
If he is not, though, Chalobah, who has been described as "unbelievable" by former Chelsea star Paul Canoville, could be a a decent alternative for the Three Lions.
