BREAKING: Inter Miami now expect Lionel Messi to sign - hope to get deal done within months

Inter Miami are increasingly confident of signing football legend Lionel Messi.

This is according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who is widely regarded as one of the most reliable journalists in sports media.

On Monday morning, Ornstein tweeted: “Inter Miami increasingly confident of signing Lionel Messi. Not fully agreed but Inter Miami now expect 35yo to join & hope it gets done in coming months. Talks resume after World Cup 2022. PSG still want renewal + FC Barcelona will try.”

The report adds that Inter Miami, who are currently managed by Englishman Phil Neville, now expect Messi to sign for them and hope the deal will be agreed in the coming months.

It’s understood that discussions between the two parties have been going on for a couple of years and there is ‘increasing confidence’ that this remarkable deal will now materialise.

Jorge and Jose Mas — the brothers who co-own Inter Miami alongside David Beckham — are reportedly leading the negotiations and numerous meetings have taken place with Messi’s father, Jorge.

Talks expected to resume after 2022 World Cup

Messi, who has been in scintillating form for PSG this season, is able to put pen to paper on an agreement with an overseas team in January.

However, no more conversations are anticipated until after the World Cup ends – and most likely in early 2023.

Qatar 2022 is expected to be Messi’s final appearance at a World Cup finals.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner turned 35 in June.

What has Beckham previously said about signing Messi?

While Beckham wouldn’t specifically talk about Messi during an interview with the Miami Herald in February, he was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: “I’ve always said I want the best players in our club and playing in our shirt because there’s a certain expectation.

“Unfortunately, sometimes it can be a bad thing. But most of the time it’s a good thing. When I first started this project, people were saying ‘This guy is coming, that guy is coming, [Cristiano] Ronaldo is coming, Messi’s coming.’

“At the end of the day, we need to win, whether it’s with the young kids or stars. Our fans will be happy if we have stars on the team, but they’ll be even happier if they’re seeing young players coming through our academy and lifting the MLS Cup.”

If the move goes ahead, Messi will become teammates with the likes of former Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs, United States international DeAndre Yedlin and Phil Neville’s son, Harvey.
