Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes is 'totally committed to the project' at St James' Park, according to South American football expert Tim Vickery.

The Magpies currently find themselves in the Premier League's top four, thanks to a flying start to the season, and the central midfielder has played a key role.

What's the latest news involving Guimaraes?

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are looking to make Guimaraes the highest-paid player in their history by putting a new contract on the table.

The report suggests the Magpies are planning to offer the eight-cap Brazil international a club-record deal worth £200,000-per-week, which would keep him on Tyneside until the summer of 2028.

Newcastle are preparing to open negotiations despite Guimaraes' current agreement, which is worth £120,000-per-week, having just shy of four years to run.

The 24-year-old has revealed he held conversations with La Liga giants Real Madrid during the latter stages of the summer transfer window, but the Magpies insisted he was not for sale and he is valued at more than £80million.

It is understood that the La Liga giants' interest is not going away, while Chelsea and Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Guimaraes' situation.

What has Tim Vickery said about Guimaraes?

Vickery understands that Guimaraes is committed to Newcastle, who have undergone a revamp since the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund led a £305million takeover last year.

The journalist feels the former Lyon man should remain in his current surroundings instead of heading onto pastures new in the coming months.

Vickery told GIVEMESPORT: "He says that he's totally committed to the Newcastle project and that's going even better than I think people could have expected this time last year.

"If he's happy there, why not stay at least for a couple of years?"

How has Guimaraes performed this season?

While a hamstring injury forced Guimaraes onto the sidelines for three fixtures, he has started every other Premier League clash and racked up four goal contributions along the way.

That only underlines how important he has become to head coach Eddie Howe since making the £40million switch from Lyon in January.

According to WhoScored, Guimaraes has been Newcastle second-best performer in the top flight this season, with Keiran Trippier being the only team-mate to better his average match rating of 7.39.

The Brazilian has also been contributing defensively, making 2.7 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 0.6 clearances per game, so there is no doubt that the Magpies should do all they can to tie him down to fresh terms.
