Aston Villa boss Unai Emery will lure Pau Torres to Villa Park if the Villarreal star is interested in heading to the Premier League, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Emery was appointed as the Midlands giants' head coach last week and will get the opportunity to bolster the squad he has inherited at the turn of the year.

What's the latest news involving Torres?

Speaking on the For the Love of Paul McGrath podcast, journalist Graham Hunter claimed Villarreal will be open to selling Torres if the right offer comes along in the coming months.

Hunter suggests Emery could seal a reunion with the central defender if he makes a positive start to his reign at Villa, who spent more than £60million during the summer transfer window.

It is not the first time that the Premier League club have been linked with Torres as it is understood that Steven Gerrard, who was sacked a matter of weeks ago, wanted to secure his services earlier this year.

Tottenham Hotspur also explored the possibility of signing the 25-year-old during the summer, while Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have held an interest as well.

Torres will enter the final 18 months of his Villarreal contract at the turn of the year and his deal includes a release clause worth close to £52million.

What has Dean Jones said about Torres?

Jones believes Emery will not hesitate in attempting to bring Torres to Villa if the opportunity arises.

The journalist feels appointing the Spaniard gives the Midlands side the upper-hand over other admirers in the Premier League.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "If he is truly up to it, then Emery will know that and he'll go and sign him. I think it's as simple as that.

"There's no-one else currently managing in the Premier League who will have as much confidence as Emery in him if that's going to happen. It'll be very interesting to see if it does."

Would Torres be a good signing for Villa?

Villa have been defensively frail all season and those problems came to the fore once again at the weekend, when they suffered a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle United.

Emery will take charge of the club for the first time when they host Manchester United on Sunday and they will go into the contest having already conceded 20 goals in the top flight.

Therefore, it is clear that defensive reinforcements are needed and Torres, a 21-cap Spain international, would be an exciting acquisition.

Villarreal have kept six clean sheets while he has been on the pitch this season, while Torres has also averaged 4.3 clearances and 0.8 tackles per La Liga outing.
