Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Bryan Gil could still ‘turn things around’ at the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Gil joined Spurs from Sevilla in a £21.6 million deal back in 2021 with Erik Lamela moving in the opposite direction, but he has struggled to make an impact in north London so far.

What is the latest news involving Gil?

A recent report from The Times claimed that Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is eager to sign replacements for both Gil and defender Japhet Tanganga in the upcoming January transfer window.

It’s believed that Conte views both players as surplus to requirements at Hotspur Way, although Gil’s recent performances have perhaps sparked hope that he could transform his fortunes.

Last term, the Spain international made just nine Premier League appearances, all as a substitute totalling just 85 minutes, before he was loaned out to Valencia.

Gil then registered only one assist in 17 outings for the La Liga outfit before returning to Tottenham where he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by once again.

What has Jones said about Gil?

Jones believes that Tanganga is surplus to requirements at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but that there is a ‘possibility’ for Gil to establish himself in Conte’s plans.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Tanganga we’ve talked about for a while, and I think that's probably real.

“But with Gil, I think that it's still a possibility for him to turn things around. I mean, when he’s come on recently, he seems to have made a positive impact.”

How has Gil been playing?

Gil has racked up just four appearances off the bench for Tottenham in 2022/23, though he did influence proceedings after coming off the bench against Sporting CP in the Champions League.

Despite playing just 19 minutes, Gil still managed to rack up two key passes, the joint-second-highest tally amongst his teammates, and put in three crosses, with only three of his colleagues managing to produce more.

And the youngster will now surely be desperate for Conte to hand him an opportunity to impress from the off.

Tottenham take on Marseille, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United before the footballing calendar is halted for the Qatar World Cup, and Gil may need to show his worth in those games to avoid being shipped out by Conte.
