Wolverhampton Wanderers may be right to consider making another attempt to appoint Julen Lopetegui as their new manager, but the situation cannot be allowed to drag on for much longer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The West Midlands outfit are still on the hunt for Bruno Lage’s permanent successor after the Portuguese was sacked at the start of October following a poor run of form.

What is the latest on the manager hunt?

Wolves previously approached Lopetegui to be their manager back in 2016, after Fosun had purchased the club, but he opted to take the Spain national team job instead.

Six years later, the club attempted to appoint the 56-year-old again after he was sacked by Sevilla, but they were rejected for personal reasons.

Mick Beale, who is currently leading high-flying Queens Park Rangers in the Championship, was approached as well but also turned down the Premier League side.

The club have since confirmed that interim manager Steve Davis will remain in position until the new year.

According to The Sun, Wolves will now return to their top choice and make another attempt to appoint Lopetegui, with the report adding he would find the English top-flight hard to turn down.

What has Jones said on the situation?

Jones understands that it may be worth making one more attempt to appoint Lopetegui for the Molineux side.

But the journalist warns that they must be prepared to move onto backups with the current uncertainty only causing further disruption.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Lopetegui might be worth one more push. He turned them down the first time because a better job came along that he couldn't turn down and the second time was because of a personal situation. It might be that after the World Cup, he is actually ready to take this job. So I think they need to gauge that as quickly as possible because it can't really drag on.”

How urgent is a new appointment at Molineux?

Despite spending more than £120 million on new signings in the summer, Wolves have endured an awful first half of the season.

They currently sit second-bottom of the division having scored just eight times in 13 games, with relegation looking more and more like a genuine prospect with each passing week.

It is clear that fresh ideas are needed at the club as soon as possible, whether that is through Lopetegui or another option.
