Everton ‘should be looking for’ a player with the skillset that Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Daniel Podence has, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a shock move to Goodison Park in recent weeks, and with his £60,000-per-week contract due to expire in the summer of 2024, he is approaching a crossroads in his career.

What is the latest news involving Podence?

Podence joined Wolves from Greek giants Olympiakos back in January 2020 for £16.9 million and has shown glimpses of his top-class ability since then.

However, the creative talent could be on the move once again after Football Insider claimed that Everton are ‘interested’ in prising him away from Molineux.

It’s believed that Frank Lampard’s charges are in the market for versatile attackers capable playing multiple positions who are already proven in the Premier League and that Podence fits those criteria.

The report states that Jorge Mendes, Podence’s agent, is set to search for a new club for his client over the coming months despite him being a regular starter at Wolves.

And January may be the final time Wolves are able to demand a sizeable fee for Podence’s services if he refuses to put pen to paper on a new contract.

What has Jones said about Podence?

Jones has stated that he would be ‘amazed’ if Wolves are prepared to offload Podence to Everton but that he is the sort of player that the Merseyside outfit need.

He told GiveMeSport: “I'd be amazed if Wolves let Podence go, especially to a team that they consider a rival like Everton.

“But I think that style of player is exactly what Everton should be looking for, somebody that can create and set up chances.”

Would Podence be a good signing?

Podence has registered 12 goals and eight assists in 82 appearances for Wolves across all competitions, leading to him being labelled ‘delightful’ by Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith.

So far this season, the 5 foot 5 ace has also averaged 1.7 shots per league game, the fourth-highest total when compared to his teammates, and 1.7 key passes, the second-highest tally amongst his colleagues, as per WhoScored.

Comfortable on either flank as well as through the middle, Podence could off Lampard much more tactical flexibility should he make the switch to Everton.

Only time will tell if Everton do make a formal approach for Podence, though, and if so, whether Wolves are willing to sanction his sale to a close rival.
