Rangers are officially the worst team in Champions League history after suffering another tough defeat on Tuesday evening.

A 3-1 home loss to Ajax rounded off a disastrous campaign for the Scottish outfit which saw them lose all six of their group games.

It will be the ultimate disappointment for Gers fans, who witnessed their club reach the final of the Europe League just a few months earlier.

And simultaneously de-railed any suggestion that Rangers would be able to compete week in week out in a league as fierce as the Premier League.

How Rangers' Champions League campaign unfolded

The club's opening group game was a sign of what was to come. A 4-0 thumping away at Ajax marked a bittersweet return to Europe's most premier competition for the Scots.

Whilst a 3-0 loss to Napoli in their second fixture only compounded feelings that they may be more than a little out of their depth in the stacked-out group.

Liverpool then disposed of Rangers 2-0 at Anfield, before drilling them 7-1 in the reverse fixture to emphasise their superiority.

Napoli proved they were the well-oiled machine everyone thought they were, putting 3-0 past Rangers yet again in the fifth group game.

And then it came down to Ajax, a club that had managed to beat just one team in the group up until then - yup, Rangers - that put the final nail in the coffin.

Their 3-1 victory in Glasgow ensured that Rangers finished the group on 0 points and with an embarrassing goal difference of -20.

That equals the existing record set by Dinamo Zagreb in 2011.

It certainly represents some fall from the heights of last year, after narrowly missing out on European glory at the hands of Frankfurt on penalties.

Van Bronckhorst on a difference in quality between the clubs

Speaking prior to the Ajax encounter, Van Bronckhorst said per Sky Sports, that Rangers "are not yet at Ajax's level" and clearly, he was right.

"We have been doing well in Europe the last three years, but we are still not at the same level as Ajax.

"We are developing and that's the way it is. It is the way the differences are in Europe at the moment.

"If you see Ajax, the players overall are from a higher level, their budget is higher.

"They bought players for £100m. They bought a not bad defender (Calvin Bassey) from us last season.

"We cannot compare ourselves to Ajax."

It seems Rangers have a long, long way to go if they want to become a competing Champions League team in the near future.
