Tottenham will once again look to sign a right wing-back in January, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Antonio Conte's side secured their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League on Tuesday after winning in Marseille, but problems on the right were highlighted by their three wing-backs being left on the bench.

What happened against Marseille?

It promised to be an anxious night for Spurs in the south of France and that's exactly how it proved to be.

However, despite falling behind just before the break, Conte's men showed character to claim their first away victory in Europe since early 2021.

Clement Lenglet's first goal for the club restored parity before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's injury-time strike completed a fine comeback and ensured Spurs claimed top spot despite spending much of the night facing the prospect of dropping into the Europa League.

But the Tottenham boss is still having issues in the wing-back areas, with Ryan Sessegnon a shock starter at right wing-back as Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal and Djed Spence were left on the bench.

Conte rectified his mistake by introducing Royal for Sessegnon at half-time, but it once again highlighted how problematic that position is proving for the Italian.

What did Jones say about Tottenham?

Despite signing a right-sided player in each of the last three summer windows, Jones once again expects Tottenham to target one when the market reopens for business in the winter.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "I do think it's a position that Tottenham will look at again in the January transfer window, which seems crazy.

"They've gone and bought Djed Spence in the summer and like I've said before, Djed Spence will be loaned out in January because he's not had many chances."

Who is Tottenham's best right wing-back?

Supporters will all have their preferred right wing-back option, with many wanting to see Spence get a chance, while others want Doherty to be given a proper run in the side over Royal.

But with Conte chopping and changing on a weekly basis, his number one in that position remains unclear despite being almost 20 games into the season.

Whatever the case, as Jones alluded to, it simply needs to be addressed in January or Tottenham will continue to face problems moving forward.
