Over the last five years, the Premier League has played host to some of the best attacking talent on the planet.

In the fiercely competitive cauldron that is the English top-flight, though, goals can be hard to come by.

While some have flourished, others never truly found their groove in the Premier League.

Attempting to find out which forwards had overperformed - and which had failed live up to expectations - the stats gurus behind the @avisualgame Twitter account put together a graphic ranking the efficiency of every Premier League attacker to have played 90 mins on at least 38 occasions and taken a minimum of 70 shots since 2017.

As he doesn't yet meet the criteria for inclusion, a certain Erling Braut Haaland doesn't make the cut (at least initially).

The position of each player on the chart was based on how often they scored (non-penalty goals) and how well took their chances.

We've taken a look at the top three best and worst in each category below. All data taken as per FBREF.

Forwards with the worst finishing ratio in the Premier League since 2017

3. Oli McBurnie (Swansea/Sheffield Utd) - 5.88% underperformance

2. Bryan Mbuemo (Brentford) - 6.67% underperformance

1. Timo Werner (Chelsea) - 6.85% underperformance

Poor Timo. It just never worked out for him at Stamford Bridge. He had the chances but somehow seemed cursed in front of goal.

Mbuemo has certainly had opportunities to add to his underwhelming tally of Premier League goals. However, he routinely fluffs his lines at the critical moment.

McBurnie was relegated with both Premier League clubs that he has represented. Even if he'd been able to match his expected goals ratio, it's unlikely that he could have changed that fact.

3. Eden Hazard (Chelsea) - 5.32% overperformance

2. Son Heung-min (Tottenham) - 5.55% overperformance

1. Leroy Sane (Man City) - 6.43% overperformance

For the occasional concerns over his work-rate while at City, Sane was an absolute magician when he was in the mood. He departed the club in 2020 to return to the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

Son, as essentially a two-footed player, generally exceeds his expected goal ratio - and his Premier League numbers over the last five years are no exception.

Hazard sparkled during his final seasons at Chelsea. How Real Madrid must wish they had the same player on their books today.

3. Bryan Mbuemo (Brentford) - 0.12 goals-per-90 mins

2. Joelinton (Newcastle) - 0.11 goals-per-90 mins

1. Adama Traore (Wolves) - 0.1 goals-per-90 mins

As thrilling as Traore can be to watch when he's rampaging forward, his frequent lack of an end product is no secret.

Newcastle spent a then-club record £40 million on Joelinton back in 2019 in an effort to solve their goalscoring woes.

It wasn't to be. He managed just 10 Premier League goals in his first three seasons on Tyneside. Thankfully, Eddie Howe has been able to get the best out of the Brazilian after switching him into midfield.

Mbuemo hasn't been prolific in the Premier League for Brentford by any means, but has played a strong foil for Ivan Toney over the last couple of seasons.

3. Harry Kane (Tottenham) - 0.56 goals-per-90-mins

2. Mo Salah (Liverpool) - 0.59-goals-per-90-mins

1. Sergio Aguero (Man City) - 0.74 goals-per-90-mins

You don't get a statue outside the Etihad Stadium by accident - and Aguero is a bona fide City legend. The club's record goalscorer has a strike rate that few in Premier League history can match.

In Salah's five full seasons at Anfield, he's only failed to hit 20 Premier League goals once, while Kane has hit well over 100 Premier League goals for Spurs since the start of the 2017/18 season.

As a result of his impressive scoring rate, Aguero is out on his own - well ahead of the likes of Kane, Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

As mentioned, Haaland didn't qualify for the graphic above due to the short amount of time he's been part of the English top-flight.

However, in response to the demands of followers, @avisualgame crunched the numbers to chart where the Norwegian striker would land based on his current Premier League numbers - and the results are just ridiculous.

How does Haaland compare to the Premier League's top performers of recent years?

With an insane current scoring rate of 1.66 goals-per-90 mins, Haaland is completely off the scale.

Aguero dominated the initial graphic, but Haaland makes the Argentine striker look almost goal-shy.

Scoring goals at present at a rate more than double that of Aguero, Haaland is an absolute monster - and the image below demonstrates that.

Fans on social media had plenty to say about the study, at both ends of the spectrum.

"Never realised Werner was that bad for Chelsea," read a first comment.

"Oh Eden, what has become of you," exclaimed one fan, noting the significant drop-off in Hazard's career since he left the Premier League.

"I mean you've got to go some to outdo McBurnie. Congrats Mbeumo," joked another poster.

"Haaland is genuinely the biggest unicorn ever. Literally off the charts," wrote a fourth fan.

"Compared to Haaland, everyone's in the lower left quadrant," stated a further reply.

"Lol, what is Haaland doing ALL THE WAY over there?" quipped a final response.
