Tottenham might consider selling Matt Doherty in January if there's interest, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The £65,000 per-week star has been reduced to a bit part role under Antonio Conte having fallen behind Emerson Royal in the right wing-back pecking order.

What's the latest news involving Doherty?

Following a difficult first 18 months or so after his switch from Wolves, Doherty finally started to prove his worth midway through last season.

The Republic of Ireland international enjoyed a long run in the side and was chipping in with both goals and assists, playing a part in helping Spurs get back into contention for the top four.

However, an injury sustained at Aston Villa in mid-April ended his season and he's struggled to win his place back since.

Doherty did start all three games when Royal was suspended for his red card in the north London derby and also the Champions League clash with Sporting CP, but he's returned to the bench for the last two league games.

Even when Royal was overlooked for the game with Marseille earlier this week, Doherty was still left on the bench, with Ryan Sessegnon tasked with an unfamiliar role at right wing-back.

What did Bridge say about Doherty?

Bridge reckons that despite enjoying a purple patch last term, Tottenham might consider shifting Doherty when the market reopens for business.

He told GIVEMESPORT "I think if there was an interest in Doherty in January, they might pursue that as well.

"But it's a sad one with him because last season before his injury against Aston Villa, he was outstanding, absolutely outstanding."

What is Doherty's contract situation?

When Doherty made the switch from Wolves back in 2020, he penned a four-year contract in north London.

As a result, he has entered the final two years of his Tottenham contract, meaning the next window or so might be Spurs' final chance to receive a decent fee for his services.

But Conte surely won't allow Doherty to leave unless he's able to sign a replacement, with the ex-Wolves likely to be needed in some capacity in the second half of the season, especially with Djed Spence surely looking to increase his game-time with a potential loan exit in January.
