Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed his interest in seeing Dmitry Bivol fight Canelo Alvarez for the second time.

When it comes to determining who the biggest stars in boxing are, a handful of contenders emerge - and Canelo Alvarez is often located towards the top of that list.

He may not have the kind of global appeal that the likes of Floyd Mayweather or Mike Tyson did, but there’s no denying that the Mexican sensation is one of the best of this - or any other - generation.

One thing that has often defined his career is his ‘dare to be great’ mentality, often taking on challenges that seem impossibly difficult in the name of reaching the very top.

In May of this year, however, he may have gone a step too far when challenging Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight championship.

Alvarez certainly gave it his all but ultimately, he came up short in a unanimous decision loss to the reigning champion.

One step beyond?

He bounced back with a trilogy success over Gennady Golovkin, whereas Bivol returns to action this weekend when he defends the strap once more against Gilberto Ramírez.

During a recent interview, Eddie Hearn spoke about the likelihood of us seeing Bivol and Canelo run it back.

“Firstly, the buzz for this fight [Bivol/Ramirez] is unbelievable,” Hearn said. “This fight is one of the fights of the year. Before the Bivol-Canelo fight, this was a 50-50 fight. Bivol is the front runner, he’s become a pound-for-pound star.

“Really there are two options for Bivol if he beats Ramirez. One is a rematch against Canelo Alvarez. One is to look for the undisputed fight. But this is a dangerous fight. Very high level, a lot of drama.”

Bivol’s big decision

Dmitry Bivol knows that he’s going to have his hands full this weekend against Ramirez, a man with a 44-0 record who wants to prove that he can mix it up with the best of the best.

Alas, it’s worth recognising that the real ‘final boss’ in this scenario for Dmitry is a showdown with Artur Beterbiev.

His fellow countryman holds the WBC, IBF and WBO equivalents of Bivol’s strap at light heavyweight and a unification bout may be too tempting to turn down.

Then again, we could be talking about generational money if he goes down the Canelo route, so we’ll have to wait and see.
