Neymar Jr is comfortably one of the most talented footballers that has ever lived.

He burst onto the scene as a teenager, setting the world alight with his ridiculous confidence, skill and flare.

It is no surprise then that, when in 2011, FourFour Two named '20 stars under 20' destined for greatness, Neymar was at the top of the list.

However, well Neymar went on to fulfil the prophecy, how have the other 19 youngsters fared?

A career riddled by injuries just never hit the meteoric heights it once promised.

Wilshere has since retired from the game.

Erik Lamela

You can see why Lamela got a mention. The Argentinean embodied that South American flair and skill but he just ever quite delivered on all his early promise.

He now finds himself taking up a regular spot on the Sevilla bench.

Adem Ljajic

Once dubbed the Serbian Kaka, Ljajic has enjoyed a decent career playing for the likes of Fiorentina, Roma and Torino.

He now plies his trade for Besiktas.

Alan Dzagoev

Oh dear. The first really awful shout of the lot, Dzagoev never made it out of Russia.

After 14 years at CSKA Moscow, he was released in May 2021.

Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey Arsenal

Another star who just never quite lived up to the hype that surrounded him in his early career.

Ramsey did of course enjoy some success at Arsenal, but now gets his game time in Ligue 1 with OGC Nice.

Iker Munian

Munian, once the youngest goalscorer in La Liga history, has enjoyed a pretty good career thus far.

500 plus appearances for Athletic Bilbao is a more than handy return.

David de Gea

Now this was a good shout.

De Gea went on to become one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the world and continues to blow our minds with some of the saves he manages to pull off.

Neymar

As mentioned before, Neymar has gone on to become a global superstar who's fame transcends football itself.

Lucas Moura

Moura is yet another talented South American star that just didn't burn quite as brightly as many had hoped.

He will always hold a special place in the hearts of Tottenham fans after that performance against Ajax in the Champions League.

Christian Eriksen

Eriksen is a bona-fide wizard on the ball and has been responsible for some truly memorable goals over the course of his career.

After the terrifying scenes during Euro 2020, he is back to his best in the colours of Manchester United.

Lacina Traore

Six foot eight inches of never quite good enough.

Traore made all of one appearance for Everton and has played for nine clubs in the last ten years.

Xherdan Shaqiri

The pocket rocket that is Shaqiri has enjoyed a truly roller-coaster career. He's played for Bayern Munich, Liverpool and, er, Stoke City.

He now wears the colours of Chicago Fire in the USA.

Eden Hazard

Another superb shout.

Hazard set Europe alight in the colours of Chelsea and, while he has struggled to hit the heights since his move to real Madrid, still boasts a catalogue of goals that would be the envy of many.

James McCarthy

Surely this had to feel like a bit of a long shot even at the time?

McCarthy is a good footballer, don't get us wrong, but seeing him on a list with Neymar and Hazard just feels very odd indeed.

Connor Wickham

Another sad tale of injury woe curtailing the early promise of a budding footballer.

Wickham now plays for Forest Green in League 1.

Ryo Miyaichi

Miyaichi was more famous for being lightning quick on FIFA than anything else.

He was on the books of Arsenal, but has since returned to play in his home country of Japan.

Mario Gotze

Gotze World Cup

Mario Gotze

It's easy to forget just how good Gotze was during those heady days at Borussia Dortmund.

He immortalised himself in German folklore by scoring the winner in the 2014 World Cup final and is enjoying a mini-revival in the colours of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Jeffrey Bruma

Bruma was on the books at Chelsea once upon a time but that's about as good as it got.

He now plays for Kasimpasa out in Turkey.

Ahmed Khalil

Yeah, we not too sure either.

Khalil never made it out of the Emirates, where he still plays to this day.

Mario Balotelli

The king of the footballing 'if only'.

Balotelli boasted bags upon bags of potential, but his mad-hatted antics both on and off the field hampered a career that promised so much.

He now plays for FC Sion in Switzerland.
