Cristiano Ronaldo will do battle with Barcelona once again as Manchester United were given the most high-profile of draws in the Europa League on Monday.

Assuming that Ronaldo remains at Old Trafford throughout the January transfer window, he will lock horns with his old foes as United and Barcelona slug it out for a place in the round of 16.

It certainly is surreal seeing the two teams who contested the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals scrapping it out to remain in Europe's second-string club competition, but it's nevertheless an appetising match-up for fans to sink their teeth into.

Ronaldo to do battle with Barcelona again

And you just know that Ronaldo will be rubbing his hands together at the prospect of dishing out punishment on the Blaugrana just as he did throughout his Real Madrid days.

After all, United fans couldn't help conjuring up imagery of Ronaldo's legendary 'calma' celebration at Camp Nou when Barcelona were drawn out of the hat this week.

And while that particular instance of Ronaldo magic in Catalonia might have transpired over a decade ago, there's also plenty of more recent evidence for the Old Trafford faithful to start boasting about.

When did Ronaldo last play Barcelona?

In fact, you only have to look at Ronaldo's latest competitive appearance against Barcelona, which saw Juventus make the trip to Camp Nou in December 2020, to find positive omens.

It was, of course, an occasion made all the more special for the fact that Ronaldo was reunited with his eternal rival Lionel Messi for the first time since he waved goodbye to the Bernabeu in 2018.

And their first meeting in years was given an extra level of spice courtesy of events which had transpired in the reverse fixture that Ronaldo missed by way of testing positive for COVID-19.

When Barcelona taunted Juventus on Twitter

On that particular occasion two months prior, Messi put on an absolute masterclass to score in a 2-0 win at the Allianz Stadium, prompting the Barcelona admin to get rather excited on Twitter.

Revelling in Messi's virtuoso performance, the Blaugrana posted on their feed that they were glad that Juventus - and yes, they did tag them - were able to see the GOAT on their pitch that night.

A provocative claim on an evening where Ronaldo wasn't able to prove the contrary, no doubt, and the Old Lady were keen to fire back with a confident retort as they tweeted: "You probably looked it up in the wrong dictionary. We'll bring you the right one at Camp Nou."

Now, let's face it, that could have ended up disastrously had Messi ran riot in the return leg, inevitably prompting tens of thousands of Barcelona fans to hit retweet and laugh their heads off.

How Ronaldo and Juventus got revenge

However, we wouldn't have said that United fans could look for positive omens in Ronaldo's last clash with Barcelona had that been the case, because there was only one GOAT who shone on that particular evening.

That's because Ronaldo had the time of his life as he smashed two penalties past Marc-André ter Stegen in a 3-0 victory that saw Juventus leapfrog Barca into top spot of their Champions League group.

And in the process, Juventus were able to exact sweet, sweet revenge on Twitter, revisiting their initial response after the first game which had been made to age like fine wine thanks to Ronaldo.

Complete with a dictionary and goat emoji, as well as an image of Ronaldo dropping his 'SIUUU' celebration at Camp Nou, Juventus enjoyed their mic drop moment: "We kept our word: we brought it!"

Ronaldo vs Barcelona will always be electric

So, although United's upcoming collision with Barcelona might not see a similar clash of the GOATs with Messi now plying his trade for Paris Saint-Germain, it couldn't be any clear that Ronaldo's return to Camp Nou will feel electric.

It might not be in the Champions League this time around, but Ronaldo could go head-to-head with Barcelona in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying rounds for all we care and it would still be box-office.

As such, let's hope the great man himself sticks around long enough to try and make Camp Nou his dance floor once again, because it could well lead to Barca receiving yet more GOAT taunts on Twitter. We can't wait.
