Gareth Southgate will name his 26-man England squad for the 2022 World Cup on Thursday afternoon.

The Qatar World Cup is just a few weeks away.

England have been given a favourable draw. They have been placed in Group B and will kick-start their campaign against Iran on November 21, before taking on USA and Wales.

The Three Lions finished fourth in Russia four years ago and will be looking to end their 56-year trophy drought.

Southgate has many big decisions to make when deciding who travels to Qatar. But who will make the squad and who will miss out?

Alan Shearer has selected the 26 players that he would select if he were England manager.

The 52-year-old gave his opinion in The Athletic and you can view his team and thoughts below...

Alan Shearer's 26-man squad for the Qatar World Cup

Goalkeepers

Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

No surprises here. Pickford will most likely be England's starter in Qatar.

Defenders

Ben White (Arsenal)

Conor Coady (Everton)

John Stones (Manchester City)

Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur)

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United)

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Shearer thinks White is deserving of a place in the squad. White has only made four appearances for England and has not featured since 2021.

Dier also makes the side after returning to form at Tottenham, while Maguire, despite his lack of game time, has also been included by Shearer.

There's no room for Fikayo Tomori.

Shearer was complimentary of Trippier, writing: "Kieran Trippier must be one of the first defenders on the team sheet at the moment."

Midfielders

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

Jack Grealish (Manchester City)

James Maddison (Leicester City)

Declan Rice (West Ham)

James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Mason Mount (Chelsea)

Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund)

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Southgate isn't a massive fan of Maddison. The Leicester midfielder has only played once for England, all the way back in 2019.

He has constantly been overlooked despite performing so well for Leicester.

"We have some incredibly talented players there, but I’d definitely be taking Leicester City’s James Maddison, who is playing exceptionally well and my only debating point would be whether he starts or not — although there’s clearly something Gareth doesn’t fancy about him," Shearer said of the 25-year-old.

Shearer thinks he should be on the plane but whether Southgate agrees is another matter.

Forwards

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Callum Wilson (Newcastle United)

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tammy Abraham (AS Roma)

Kane is a certainty to start, but who should be travel to Qatar as back up?

Shearer thinks Wilson and Abraham, who has scored just three times for Roma in 2022/23, should be on the plane at the expense of Ivan Toney and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Explaining his calls, he wrote: "I’ve left out Brentford’s Ivan Toney and gone for Tammy Abraham and Callum Wilson.

"I understand that if England are to win the World Cup they’re almost certain to have to win a penalty shootout somewhere down the line and I understand the clamour for Toney to be involved, but I’d be a bit concerned about how his physicality might be viewed by referees at the highest level.

"Wilson has long-standing fitness issues but has been brilliant for Newcastle United."
