The news that Fenway Sports Group had put Liverpool FC up for sale swept the media on Monday afternoon.

It was met by a mix of shock, optimism and concern among fans of the club, with many unsure about what their future may look like.

Many fans recognised that the current ownership had probably run its course, while also being aware of the uncertainty that changing ownership brings.

It comes at a time when the team themselves are underperforming on the pitch, despite being one of the best teams in the world last year.

Who will buy Liverpool Football Club?

Of course, speculation has started over who the new owners might be.

Liverpool would surely be an attractive prospect for many potential buyers due to the club’s recent success and financial investment into assets such as a new training centre. In recent years, we’ve seen Middle Eastern investors buying into teams such as Man City and Newcastle, as well as American buyers in the case of Chelsea.

There are bound to be interested parties out there, but someone you may not expect to see in these discussions is UFC star Conor McGregor.

What has Conor McGregor said about buying Liverpool?

The Notorious McGregor is one of UFC’s most influential fighters and helped put mainstream eyes on the company.

The former lightweight and featherweight double champion even started his own whiskey company, so you’d imagine that he has plenty of funds to look into buying a club.

On Twitter, the Irishman quote tweeted a Liverpool fan who suggested the idea of purchasing the club and said the following: "I WOULD LOVE IT! I requested my information on this, yes. Soon as I heard. What a turn of events! What a club!"

Who does Conor McGregor support in football?

This would be a crazy thing to happen, but, as many fans may know, McGregor is an avid supporter of Manchester United.

His club loyalties haven’t stopped him before, though, with the Irishman suggesting that he was interested in buying Chelsea when they were put up for sale.

Who knows whether McGregor genuinely did request information regarding the sale of Liverpool, but with FSG looking for a rumoured price of around £4 billion, it’s unlikely that even a star as big as him would be able to afford the deal.
