Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is facing a 'big dilemma' over whether to keep David De Gea at Old Trafford or dip into the transfer market for a new first choice goalkeeper, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Spaniard has been on the Red Devils' books for more than a decade, having completed a £18.9million switch from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but there are question marks over where his long-term future lies.

What's the latest news involving De Gea?

De Gea is set to enter the final six months of his £375,000-per-week contract in January, but Manchester United hold an option to extend the agreement by a year.

Despite that, there are doubts over whether the Red Devils will take advantage of the 12-month extension as it is understood that their wage bill reached a Premier League record £384million for last season and their financial situation will dictate how they act.

De Gea has insisted that Manchester United 'is my club' and he wants to break records by remaining with his current employers.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, Laurie Whitwell has revealed that the 32-year-old is so desperate to stay at Old Trafford that he is willing to discuss a new contract on reduced terms.

Away from Manchester United, De Gea suffered a blow earlier this month when he was reportedly left out of Spain's 55-man provisional squad list for the World Cup.

What has Dean Jones said about De Gea?

Jones understands that De Gea's distribution is not up to the standard Manchester United chief ten Hag would like.

However, the transfer insider believes the saves he has pulled off during the first half of the season has left the Dutchman with a difficult decision to make over De Gea's future.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "We know that De Gea, typically, isn't the sort of goalkeeper that we would see playing under ten Hag because his kicking isn't good enough and his passing isn't good enough.

"But he has also done well for them this season, so what they do with that goalkeeping situation is a big dilemma for the new year."

Have Manchester United been linked with any De Gea replacements?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United will continue monitoring Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa while a decision is still to be made over De Gea's future.

The transfer guru suggests the Red Devils have earmarked Costa as a 'top talent' and Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan with Nottingham Forest, will move onto pastures new following his return to Old Trafford.

Manchester United's continued interest in Costa comes despite the Porto custodian penning a new five-year contract earlier this month.
