Gareth Southgate named England's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup on Thursday afternoon.

Harry Kane is England's talisman and there was no doubt that he'd be included.

Also in the side and set to play a big part in Qatar include Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.

Harry Maguire makes the side despite losing his place at Manchester United while James Maddison, so often overlooked by Southgate in the past, is also included in the squad.

It was bad news for the likes of Ivan Toney and Fikayo Tomori with both missing out.

England have been placed in Group B and will begin their campaign against Iran on November 21.

Ahead of the tournament, we've ranked England's 26-man squad, as well a few players to miss out, from 'First name on the team sheet' to 'unlucky to miss out'.

England's World Cup squad ranked

First name on the team sheet

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Kane is integral to England's success.

If on form, England stand a real chance of winning the tournament. The Three Lions have no chance of ending their long trophy drought if he's not at his best.

Guaranteed starter

Jordan Pickford (Everton), Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Declan Rice (West Ham United), John Stones (Manchester City)

The five players named above should start in virtually every game for England in Qatar.

Sterling has not been at his best at Chelsea this season but always delivers for England.

Bellingham, despite being just 19 years old, should be a regular starter alongside Rice in midfield.

Key contributor

Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)

The players named above should feature heavily for England at the World Cup but won't necessarily start every game.

Foden and Saka are both very exciting young players and have the potential to lead England to glory.

Walker would have been a guaranteed starter but there are doubts surrounding his fitness as he recovers from injury.

Squad player

James Maddison (Leicester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Ben White (Arsenal), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Callum Wilson (Newcastle), Nick Pope (Newcastle), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), Conor Coady (Wolves)

The players named above perhaps won't get too many minutes in Qatar but have the quality needed to excel if called upon.

Alexander-Arnold's chances of playing time have been bolstered following Reece James' omission from the squad. If called upon, he has the potential to make the difference.

Grealish, Rashford and Maddison perhaps won't start many games but can make an impact off the bench.

Wilson may also not feature heavily in Qatar but has the potential to make a difference should England desperately need a goal.

Lucky to be included

Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

Phillips has missed much of the season due to a shoulder injury and only made his return in Manchester City's match against Chelsea in midweek. His fitness is a huge question.

Gallagher has struggled for minutes at Chelsea, while Dier's inclusion in the squad instead of Tomori is debatable.

Maguire has lost his place at United after a loss of form and is perhaps lucky to be included.

Unlucky to miss out

Reece James (Chelsea), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

James and Chilwell would both have been key players for England had they not been ruled out through injury.

Ward-Prowse and Toney have been superb for Southampton and Brentford over the past few years and are unlucky to miss out. Both could have been useful if a game goes to penalties.

While Tomori's exclusion from the squad can be considered harsh. The AC Milan defender was one of Serie A's best defenders in their Scudetto winning campaign in 2021/22.
