Tottenham Hotspur signing a defender in January ‘would not be a surprise at all’, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Antonio Conte was backed over the summer, spending around £150 million on new acquisitions, but further reinforcements could arrive over the coming months.

What is the latest news involving Tottenham?

The Times have claimed that Conte is eager to add a central defender, midfielder and striker to his first-team squad but will not compromise on the quality of the player over the winter window.

It’s believed that the Italian tactician is eager for any fresh arrivals to be ‘proven’ and ‘capable of going straight into the starting line-up’.

Conte has often favoured experienced players throughout his managerial career during spells at Juventus, Inter Milan and Chelsea, and has already brought 33-year-old Ivan Perisic to Tottenham.

The capital club’s chief could opt to go down a similar route when the market reopens for business, adding some know-how to the spine of his setup.

What has Brown said about Tottenham?

A left-sided central defender appeared to be at the top of Conte’s wish list over the summer, but he had to settle for the loan signing of Clement Lenglet from Barcelona.

And Brown has informed GiveMeSport that he believes Tottenham could go and ‘get another defender’ in January to satisfy the fiery 53-year-old.

He said: “It does seem like they might be willing to go and get another defender because Conte does love a defender, and his system requires covering all those positions, so that would not be a surprise at all.”

Who could Tottenham target?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that RB Leipzig duo Mohamed Simakan and Josko Gvardiol are ‘two players they really like’ in a recent interview.

“I can tell you that one of the players you have been watching for a long time is RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan,” Romano said.

“Another player they hold in high esteem is Gvardiol. Those are two players they really like, but it depends on the price. We know how difficult it is to negotiate with Leipzig.”

Football Insider have also stated that Tottenham ‘remain keen’ on snapping up Inter’s Stefan de Vrij, who is set to become a free agent next summer.

All three are quality centre-backs who could improve the options currently available to Conte at Tottenham and would surely meet the manager’s requirements.
