Liverpool have watched PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo "very closely", according to transfer reporter Dean Jones.

The 23-year-old's fine form over the last year has seen him attract interest from the Premier League and win a place in the Netherlands' World Cup squad.

What is the latest news involving Gakpo?

Journalist Fabrizio Romano recently claimed in his CaughtOffside column that Manchester United and other clubs from England are interested in signing Gakpo.

According to Romano, the Dutchman is likely to cost around £44m, with PSV, understandably, valuing him very highly.

Last season, Gakpo scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in 27 Eredivisie appearances, while this term, he has managed nine and 12 respectively in just 14 outings.

A lot of eyes will now be on him once the Netherlands begin their World Cup campaign against Senegal.

What has Jones said about Gakpo and Liverpool?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Liverpool are another English club who are currently looking at Gakpo.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: "They have watched him and they have monitored him very closely, as closely as most other teams have so far. They just haven't been linked with him as frequently.

"Now, I think it depends really on how their squad shapes up for the return to action as to whether they will be likely to go for him."

Will Gakpo shine at the World Cup?

If his form for PSV is anything to go by, then he has a very good chance of doing just that.

At club level, Gakpo has proven that he is a winger who is capable of both scoring and creating goals.

Africa Cup of Nations champions Senegal, who have the likes of former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane and Chelsea duo Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, will provide a hard test. But Gakpo certainly has the ability to cause some damage if Louis van Gaal gives him the nod.

And if the Netherlands international, who has been described as "elite" by TEAMtalk editor James Marshment, has a good tournament, you would expect interest from the likes of Liverpool and United to grow.

From a Liverpool perspective, most supporters would probably welcome such a signing to Anfield in January. Jurgen Klopp's side have not been amazing this season, finding themselves outside of the top four, and have had a couple of injury problems in the attacking positions, with Luis Diaz currently sidelined.
