Newcastle United's impressive start to the season along with their financial backing could see them attract the same players as the Premier League's top four or five clubs, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

Why are Newcastle suddenly an attractive option?

When the Newcastle takeover was confirmed in October last year, the Magpies overnight become one of the richest clubs in football.

The £300 million takeover by the Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) came with its own controversy, but it's allowed the club to flex their muscles in the transfer market in a way they haven't done in decades.

However, after appointing Eddie Howe, Newcastle have made clever and strategic steps in improving the squad, with their biggest outlay coming on the club-record signing of Alexander Isak.

Yet, it's their performances on the pitch that have added to the attraction for any possible new arrivals. Howe has led Newcastle to third place in the Premier League, with the club losing just one league game all season and looking a genuine contender for a top four finish.

What does Dean Jones say about Newcastle's position?

Transfer insider Dean Jones thinks that Newcastle's run to the Premier League's top four and their financial potential means they can now compete for players with the rest of the league's top clubs.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "I think Newcastle have put themselves in a wonderful position very, very quickly, and that they could almost attract the sort of players now, that the traditional top four or five could."

Who could Eddie Howe look to sign for Newcastle?

So far Newcastle's transfer policy has seem them mainly stick to slowly improving the squad without the expected lavish spending on superstar names - Isak aside.

However, given they are in a Champions League position earlier than many would have predicted, the club may be tempted to dip into their vast transfer fund and secure the riches that a top four place bring - while still keeping within the FFP guidelines.

A name they seem to be one of the frontrunners for right now is Brighton's Leandro Trossard, according to Graeme Bailey on the Talking Transders podcast. The Belgium has been one of the stars of the season so far and proved he has what it takes to take on the best, by netting against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Magpies could be back in for World Cup-bound star James Maddison, according to The Times. Newcastle had two bids for the player rejected in the summer, but given his form this season and Newcastle's current upward trajectory, they could be tempted to go back in for the England star.
