Tottenham Hotspur will be frustrated in their attempts to lure Alessandro Bastoni to Hotspur Way as Inter Milan are 'not open to letting him go in January', according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs have gone into the break from domestic action sitting fourth in the Premier League, but head coach Antonio Conte will be handed an opportunity to bolster his squad when the winter window opens for business at the turn of the year.

What's the latest news involving Bastoni?

According to Italian media outlet Inter Live, Tottenham are interested in signing Bastoni and could head to the negotiating table with a bid worth close to £44million.

The report suggests Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are also keen on the 16-cap Italy international, but Inter are preparing to open talks over a new contract as they look to stave off his suitors.

Bastoni is set to enter the final 18 months of his current deal, which is worth £89,000-per-week, at the turn of the year.

Tottenham have been long-term admirers of the 23-year-old and it is understood that he was included on a four-man shortlist of left-sided centre-back targets ahead of the summer.

Conte is reportedly seeking upgrades in the backline, midfield and attack during the winter transfer window.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Bastoni?

Romano understands that Tottenham are eager to strengthen their options at the heart of their defence during the early stages of 2023.

However, the Italian journalist is aware that Inter are unwilling to negotiate a deal which would see Bastoni head to north London.

Romano told GIVEMESPORT: "They're looking for a centre-back because, in that position, they probably need a new player in January.

"I have seen a lot of links with Alessandro Bastoni, but I'm told that Inter are not open to letting him go in January."

Would Bastoni be a good signing for Tottenham?

Conte solved his defensive problem by signing Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona during the summer, but statistics show that Bastoni would be an upgrade on the Frenchman.

According to FBref, the Inter man has averaged more interceptions per 90 minutes since the season got underway, while he has also tackled a higher number of dribblers.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that Spurs see Bastoni as 'an absolute dream signing'.

That should come as no surprise as Conte knows his fellow countryman well, having selected him 74 times during their spell together at the San Siro.

There is no doubt that Bastoni, who has won an abundance of silverware for club and country, would be an astute signing for Tottenham.
