Southampton star James Ward-Prowse could stay at St Mary's for the remainder of his career believes transfer insider Dean Jones.

How loyal as Ward-Prowse been to Saints?

James Ward-Prowse has been at Southampton since he was eight years old, despite coming from a Portsmouth supporting family.

He made his debut for Saints in a League Cup tie against Crystal Palace in October 2011 and has now gone on to make 380 appearances for the club, scoring 46 goals.

The 28-year-old has earned the reputation of a set-piece specialist and only David Beckham has scored more free-kicks in Premier League history than the Southampton midfielder, leading Pep Guardiola to call him the best free-kick taker in the world.

Those attributes have seen Ward-Prowse consistently linked with a move away from St Mary's, and he was the subject of interest from West Ham in the summer. Meanwhile Aston Villa wanted to sign the Saints star in 2021 before Ward-Prowse decided to stay at the club and sign a new long-term deal.

What did Dean Jones say about James Ward-Prowse?

Dean Jones thinks that the £100,000-a-week star may have missed his opportunity to make the move from the South Coast and he could end being a Southampton lifer.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "He's had this conundrum before though, and I just wonder whether the time has passed for him to be honest. I think he's thought about it in the past year. It didn't happen, and at this moment, given the loyalty showed, he does have the look of a one-club man to me. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he actually just sees it out at Saints."

Could Ward-Prowse's England snub force a move?

For the second consecutive tournament, James Ward-Prowse has narrowly missed out on making a final squad for the campaign. That is even more gutting this time around considering Gareth Southgate had a bigger 26-man party to play with.

Instead of Ward-Prowse, Southgate went with Kalvin Phillips, despite him missing most of the season through injury and somewhat more surprisingly Conor Gallagher. The Chelsea star has been part of the England set-up, but not many would have called his inclusion above the Southampton midfielder.

Previously Ward-Prowse has stated how hard it was to take not being part of the Euro 2020 squad, so this latest exclusion could make the midfielder think about whether his future lies away from the South Coast club.

He has been capped 11 times for his country since making his debut in 2017, scoring two goals. Yet, he may feel playing on a bigger stage, with European football may give him a stronger case in keeping his place in future England squads.
