Conor McGregor has been told that he will not fight at lightweight level again by a sports doctor.

It has been a difficult 14 months for the Irishman because he has not fought since his leg break in July 2021, when he suffered a second straight defeat to Dustin Poirier.

For that fight, he came in at 155lbs, but those days are long gone for Notorious now according to Dr David Abassi.

Conor McGregor's time away from UFC

After working hard to make sure he can get back fighting again, McGregor went on an individualised programme to return to fitness. He revealed a huge 190lbs frame as he boosted his already impressive physique whilst unable to be involved in fighting training.

One thing that McGregor has in abundance, however, is his determination and will to succeed, and after showing off his impressive physique recently, he confirmed his intentions to return at 170lbs, which was his weight when he won his last fight against Donald Cerrone in 2020.

However, sports surgeon Dr David Abassi has quashed any hopes of the former two-weight champion achieving a lightweight return because he tweeted on social media that “he’s never making 155 again.”

In the past, McGregor suggested that he is currently weighed at around 190lbs, which would not be enough for him to reach his intended target as he would need to reduce it by 35lbs to suit the division requirements.

He is desperate to get back to the weight and level that saw him earn his second strap with victory over Eddie Alvarez in 2016.

McGregor has had the spotlight shone on him by UFC fans, who are suggesting that his weight gains could see him suffer crucial stamina issues when he returns to the Octagon.

People have also raised question marks if there is a possibility that he will not be able to return because he is outside of the USADA testing pool and is facing a lengthy time away from the cage.

However UFC legend Chael Sonnen has suggested that McGregor’s weight gain is from water retention, and expects the Mixed Martial Arts star to be able to easily cut to 170lbs when he returns to full training.

“Conor comes out and he looks big," Sonnen said in a YouTube video. "Then it gets revealed that he’s not in the USADA testing pool. Two plus two does not equal four, not if that’s your two. It’s just not that way.

"Conor did not look overly strong, by the way. You saw a guy who was bloated. Why would he be bloated? Well, he’s bloated because he’s not sweating out six pounds a day like his body is used to doing and had done every day for the last decade. So he’s retained a lot of water weight."
