Liverpool are exploring the market and have already made contact over potential signings ahead of the January transfer window, according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds have had a difficult season so far by their high standards, but it looks like they could get a boost in the new year.

What is the current state of Liverpool's squad?

Liverpool lost Sadio Mane during the summer, but they are still pretty strong in attack thanks to Mohamed Salah and the arrival of Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

The Uruguay international has scored five league goals in 10 appearances, which is quite a decent record.

They have had some injuries there, though, with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota both currently sidelined, while it has been a similar theme in midfield.

Naby Keita is struggling to stay fit, for example, and is out of contract at the end of the season, so perhaps Klopp could do with an addition or two in January to help his side climb back into the top four.

What has Romano said about Liverpool's January transfer plans?

Romano has told GIVEMESPORT that Liverpool will act in the winter window if a good opportunity presents itself.

Speaking to GMS, the transfer expert said: "In January, it will be about the opportunities. I think they need some fresh players to help Jurgen Klopp.

"They're exploring the market. They're having some contacts to see if there are some good opportunities, but the main focus will be on the new midfielder, a top midfielder, in the summer."

Who could Liverpool sign?

In an ideal world, Klopp would probably love to bring Jude Bellingham to the club in January.

The Athletic reported back in September that Liverpool are one of several European giants who are after the Borussia Dortmund midfielder's signature.

However, it is highly unlikely that Dortmund will sell one of their best players in the middle of the season. So if Klopp wants to sign someone for the middle of the park in January, he is probably going to have to look elsewhere.

Further forward, there has been talk about Liverpool being interested in Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze, which sounds like a much easier transfer to do.

Again, with the Merseyside club having injury problems in attack this term, signing a new wide man or forward does make sense.

Ultimately, though, it would be a surprise if Liverpool were extremely active in the upcoming transfer window. Their main targets, like Bellingham, do not seem to be available right now. With that in mind, then, next summer is when you would expect them to be really busy.
