England's World Cup squad in 2006 was full of legends.

The side comprised of multiple world-class players including Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney.

But, despite being stacked with talent all over the pitch, they failed to win silverware in Germany.

The Three Lions crashed out of the competition in the quarter-finals as they suffered another heartbreaking defeat to Portugal on penalties.

England begin their 2022 World Cup campaign on Monday when they take on Iran in their Group B clash.

But how does the current squad compare to England's stacked 2006 squad?

Ferdinand has selected his combined XI from England's 2006 and 2022 World Cup sides.

The England and Man Utd legend made his selections in a video published on JOE.co.uk's YouTube channel and you can view it below...

GK: Jordan Pickford

"I'll probably go with Pickford [over Paul Robinson] for what he's done for England. He's been really good. Unfazed with England and he's in good form at the moment as well. He's been really good in an England shirt."

CB: Sol Campbell

"He was the best partner I had with England - where I felt the strongest."

CB: Rio Ferdinand

Ferdinand had to put himself in the heart of the defence. He made 81 appearances for his country.

CB: Kyle Walker

"That would be the quickest back three in the tournament," Ferdinand said after selecting Walker.

RWB: David Beckham

Ferdinand initially went with Trent Alexander-Arnold before changing to Beckham.

LWB: Ashley Cole

Ferdinand was in no hesitation when selecting Cole in his side.

CM: Michael Carrick

Ferdinand selected Carrick in his side over Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

CM: Frank Lampard

Lampard scored 29 times in 106 outings for his country.

CAM: Steven Gerrard

Gerrard has been selected in the attacking midfield spot ahead of the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount.

ST: Harry Kane

"What he's achieved goals wise has been ridiculous. He will probably go on and break the record."

On Michael Owen's omission, he said: "If it was earlier Michael Owen, I would have gone Owen. But's it's 2006 Owen..."

ST: Wayne Rooney

"I think he's in the conversation [for best England player of all-time]. What I saw him do... crazy, crazy player.

"Rooney scores 30/40 goals in today's game. He's one of the best or the best player in the Premier League today if he plays, he's that good.

"He's going to be retired for 20 years before people start appreciating him. Defenders weren't ready for him. He was a machine."
