The wait is over, the brand new version of the iconic 'Three Lions' song has officially dropped.

David Baddiel and Frank Skinner have once again teamed up with the Lightning Seeds to revamp the 26-year-old England anthem just in time for the World Cup.

With new lyrics, a new video and the Lionesses featured, the Christmas-themed hit is ready to get stuck in everyone's heads.

Why did they release a new version of Three Lions?

For decades, England fans have been belting out this iconic song during international tournaments.

Of course, it was written with the hope that the team would be able to bring home a trophy for the first time since 1966. However, there was no such luck during Euro 96, nor any other time for the men's side.

However, all that changed this summer when England Women played out a fairytale on home soil at Euro 2022.

After beating Germany in front of a record European crowd at Wembley, the Lionesses ended 56 years of hurt and brought football home at last.

So, with a trophy finally in the cabinet, there was no longer the need to sing about yearning for England to break their drought.

Baddiel himself even admitted he thought the anthem would be "put to bed" after Euro 2022, due to it essentially being redundant.

So why not keep the song alive and relevant by updating the lyrics and adding some Christmas sparkle?

"Me and Frank said, ‘let’s rewrite it with some Christmassy lyrics and some comedy’. And we thought we’d write about the Lionesses winning, update it a bit," the comedian said during The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X.

What are the new Three Lions lyrics?

Don't panic, the ever-catchy and trademark chorus remains the same. Fans will still be able to chant 'it's coming home' just as they have done for the last 26 years.

The rest of the lyrics have been changed in order to be relevant to England's current history, while also adding some tongue-in-cheek jokes from both Baddiel and Skinner, mainly about the World Cup being held in Qatar.

The video starts with the Lionesses and the incredible moment that went viral after they won Euro 2022. They burst into manager Sarina Wiegman's press conference singing 'football's coming home' with their medals swinging around their necks.

As the women sing and dance around the conference table, the music kicks in.

The video is exactly the same, but now with a young Baddiel and Skinner watching the Lionesses on the old television. The present day versions of themselves join them on the sofa for a brew wearing Christmas jumpers.

Here are a few samples of the lyrics from the new Three Lions (It's Coming Home for Christmas) anthem.

"Loving that Lionesses win.

“But thoughts of last year’s final kick in.

“And Moscow.

“And Turin.

“The blokes seem cursed.

“Whatever they try.

“And I think I know why.

“They’re just jinxed in July.

“But it’s December…"

Just as they were in 1996, Baddiel and Skinner are hopeful the men can dig deep and bring it home, hopefully avoiding the curse that is summertime football.

The two also added some comic relief into the lyrics, including questioning the location of the 2022 World Cup.

"When they decided on Qatar, should have checked VAR," Baddiel sings. "It’s too hot, and too far. So we’ll be…

"…snowflakes watching it here. This is our time of year, we’ll be having a beer."

"Actually, I won’t because I’ve got alcohol issues…" Skinner followed up.

Baddiel and Skinner also made sure to differentiate when singing about how long the teams have been waiting for a trophy.

"56 years of hurt (for the men's game)."

"20 weeks of hurt (for the women's game, obviously)."

Understandably, fans are loving the updated version of the hit song.

“Christmas number one right here,” remarked one fan.

“Absolutely glorious”, said another.

Meanwhile, a third admitted: “I know I should hate it, but I don’t. IT’S COMING HOME!”

Overall, it's an incredibly wholesome video and one that backs both the England men's and women's team. Could it add a little bit of luck for the Three Lions in Qatar?
