Wolverhampton Wanderers are likely to be "slightly busy" in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Julen Lopetegui's side are currently bottom of the table, and may need reinforcements to preserve their Premier League status.

What is the latest news involving Wolves?

Wolves appointed Bruno Lage's successor, Lopetegui, at the beginning of November but he is yet to officially take charge, instead watching on from afar as his new side progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 victory against Leeds United.

However, it was much of the same in the Premier League, albeit against difficult opposition, as the Wanderers fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in the last game before the World Cup break.

Estadio Deportivo recently linked Real Madrid centre-back Nacho Fernandez, who Lopetegui is said to be a long-term admirer of, with a move to Molineux, while also highlighting his teammate, Mariano Diaz, as a potential signing at striker.

Another option at the heart of defence is Pau Torres, with the new man in the dugout said to be 'keen' on the 25-year-old in a 90min report, although a deal for the Spaniard could set a potential suitor back upwards of £40m.

As for midfield additions, it is rumoured by Gazzetta dello Sport that the recruitment team are considering a move for Carlos Alcaraz, who currently plays for Racing Club (via Sport Witness).

What has Sheth said about Wolves?

Sheth backs Wolves to strengthen in the transfer window, in order to alleviate the "difficult situation" that the club find themselves in.

In an interview with GIVEMESPORT, he said:

"Wolves are in a difficult position just now, and I think they are going to need all the help they can get. So I would predict that Wolves could be slightly busy in January, only because they've got a new manager and they'd want to back him."

What position do Wolves need to strengthen most?

Goals have been a major concern for the Fosun-owned club this season, netting just eight goals in their 15 Premier League games, the lowest total of any side in the league.

A striker should be the main priority for Lopetegui in the upcoming window, and the aforementioned Mariano is a possibility, although he has not had a prolific season since scoring 18 in 34 for Lyon in the 2017-18 campaign.

The current first choice in the Wolves attack is Diego Costa, who has been dubbed "fantastic" by teammate Ruben Neves, however he is yet to score in six Premier League appearances for the club, and is approaching the twilight of his career, at 34.

As such, Lopetegui should work towards identifying a suitable replacement in the coming months, to ensure that Wolves escape the relegation battle that they currently find themselves in.
