Manchester United may move for LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David in January due to ‘an interesting domino effect’, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial tell-all interview with Piers Morgan kick-started a chain of events which has seen the club confirm that the Portugal star has left the club by mutual consent late Tuesday afternoon.

What is the latest news involving David?

Ronaldo's exit has surely accelerated the need for a replacement for Erik ten Hag and it appears that the club could have someone in mind.

Romano has previously stated that David is likely to be on the move next year following an impressive spell with Lille, helping them claim the Ligue 1 title in 2020/21.

“Jonathan David, I’m told that soon, many clubs will move and there is a great, great chance for him to make his move in 2023,” the transfer expert claimed on his YouTube channel.

“Let’s see if it will be January, let’s see if it will be [in the] summer, but Jonathan David is expected to leave Lille in 2023 and many clubs are tracking him.”

The Manchester Evening News has revealed that the Canada international is on United’s shortlist for Ronaldo replacements, while the player has admitted that he wants to play for a ‘massive club’.

What has Romano said about David?

Romano believes that Ronaldo’s exit from Old Trafford could cause a ripple effect that sees David become an option to replace him.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Let's see if Man United will decide to go for him because he could be available in January or if Jonathan David will go elsewhere.

“It could become a kind of domino, an interesting domino effect for Man United, but for sure, they need a striker when Cristiano leaves.”

Could David excel at the World Cup?

David is expected to play a key part for Canada during the ongoing World Cup having found the back of the net on 22 occasions in just 35 caps and is valued at around £48 million as a result.

Many of the versatile attacker’s strikes have come against lowly opposition such as Cuba, Suriname and Martinique, though, and the showpiece event in Qatar will represent a much greater challenge.

Canada are set to take on Belgium, Croatia and Morocco in Group F, and a large portion of their hopes of reaching the knockout stages will rest of David’s shoulders.

A strong World Cup showing could convince United that he’s the ideal candidate to bolster Erik ten Hag’s forward line, succeeding the outgoing Ronaldo.
