West Ham United and Ivory Coast wide man Maxwel Cornet’s injury can be assessed daily, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery.

The 26-year-old hasn’t made an appearance for David Moyes’ side since suffering a thigh injury in the side’s 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in October.

What’s the latest on Cornet?

Moyes confirmed at the end of October that Cornet had suffered a setback in his recovery from the injury sustained at the beginning of that month, with the winger having only made one Premier League start for the club so far.

Whilst the 29-time Ivory Coast international has never suffered a lay-off as lengthy as this in his career, he has suffered from a number of niggly injuries that have hampered his playing time during spells at both Lyon and Burnley.

With the Premier League’s break for the World Cup upon us, Moyes and his staff will be hoping that the £17.5m summer signing can be fit for a return to competitive action away at Arsenal on the evening of the 26th December.

And Dinnery believes that the medical team at West Ham must monitor Cornet’s injury closely, and not rush him back into action or risk another setback in his recovery.

What has Dinnery said about Cornet’s injury?

Dinnery told GIVEMESPORT: “That initial timeline for Cornet was around two to three weeks.

“Typically, when you suffer a setback, you're maybe looking at an additional seven to ten days on top of that, maybe even 14.

“It's one of those muscular problems where you don't want to push players too hard once they’ve had that reaction because essentially you could put them out for a significant period.

“So, I think, it'll be one that can be even assessed on a daily basis.

“Ones where you will work with the players, you want to make sure that they're coming through that recovery process, without any kind of issues.

“Because once that happens, if you have a flare-up again, you just need to ease the players back.”

What next for Cornet?

The West Ham players who are not at the World Cup will travel to Cambridge United for a mid-season friendly on 6th December, as well as a trip to Fulham later that month, which could be the ideal opportunity to get minutes under the belt for Cornet, ahead of the club’s Boxing Day trip to Arsenal.

However, with fitness and performance the main priority in friendlies, Moyes and his staff will have to monitor Cornet to see if there is any potential risk of another flare-up of his initial thigh injury, the last thing both player and club will want.

It’s an unpredictable situation with the fitness of the Ivorian, and the club will hope that he can come through the World Cup break unscathed and raring for action for the second half of the campaign.
