Wales made their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup as they opened their campaign with a clash against the USA.

64 long years finally came to a jubilant end as the Welsh descended on the tiny Gulf nation of Qatar en-masse to drink in the incredible occasion.

Having done it the hard way, going through the qualifying play-offs, Welsh fans weren't about to miss their shot to see their side in the biggest show on earth for the first time in a generation.

Wales hoping to do some damage in Qatar

With the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey leading the charge, there is a genuine sense that Wales could do some real damage in Qatar.

Coach Robert Page has fostered a real sense of togetherness in a Welsh team that shares a special connection with their deeply affectionate and passionate fan base.

The aforementioned Bale has been an inspiration, but every player to a man deserves immense credit for the way they banded together to earn their spot in the finals.

It was no surprise then to see the Al Rayyan Stadium absolutely packed to the rafters with giddy Welsh fans, bedecked in their striking red and, of course, the iconic bucket hats.

It's the sort of patriotic support that has become so embedded in the very veins of Wales football and boy did they put on a show for the world on Monday night.

With the eyes of the world watching, Welsh fans cleared their throats and gave us one of the most spine-tingling renditions of a national anthem the World Cup has ever seen.

You would think that following up the USA's iconic Star Spangled Banner would be no small task, but the Welsh were by no means over-awed.

They sang with all the frustrated passion that 64 years of hurt can cause, sending a stark warning to the USA that they were there to be a vociferous twelfth man.

Unreal - just look at the passion of those fans.

As the camera cut to individuals in the crowd, you could see just how much it meant to them to be at a World Cup belting out their very own national anthem.

It was a truly spectacular moment that perfectly encapsulated the passion and doggedness of the Welsh.

They will be hoping for many more opportunities to shake the foundations of the different stadia around Qatar as they give their all for their team.
