One England fan had an absolute nightmare after cashing out their £9 bet on a 6-2 victory over Iran before the final whistle.

Gareth Southgate's side got their World Cup campaign off to a fantastic start, triumphing 6-2 over Iran.

Many predicted a tight, nervy match with the Three Lions struggling to break down Carlos Queiroz's side.

It was anything but as England ran riot.

Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling put England 3-0 ahead at half time. After the break, another strike from Saka as well as goals from Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish gave England a convincing 6-2 win with Mehdi Taremi scoring two consolations for Iran.

Two William Hill customers bet on England 6-2 Iran

Who saw that coming?

Well, two William Hill customers it seems.

At odds of 200/1, one punter won a sweet £2,000. Not a bad start to the tournament!

However, one fan pocketed just £14 despite putting on the same bet.

Why?

Well, because they didn't quite hold their nerve.

Grealish put England 6-1 ahead in the 90th minute before an additional 10 minutes were added on at the end of the match.

Lengthy injury time is something we've seen a lot of so far this tournament.

In the 97th minute, the fan in question cashed out his £10 bet for just £14 when he was set to land almost £2,000.

Profit is profit and Iran surely weren't going to score a second goal in the final few minutes, were they?

But then, in the final seconds of the match, they were awarded a hugely controversial penalty by VAR for John Stones' shirt pull.

Taremi made no mistake from the spot to make one England fan feeling sick to the stomach.

William Hill Spokesperson, Lee Phelps, said: “It might have only been against Iran but England couldn’t have started their World Cup campaign in better fashion.

“The 6-2 victory has seen us cut the Three Lions’ price from 7/1 to 13/2 and we’ve also cut Bukayo Saka’s Golden Boot price from 100/1 to 20/1 after he scored twice.

“The resounding scoreline, which was priced at 200/1, was correctly predicted by just two customers, both of whom had £10 on it. It wasn’t quite as good for another though, who had £9 on 6-2, but cashed out for just £14!”

Southgate: England must improve

Despite the performance - and result - Southgate insists his side must improve later in the tournament.

"We're really pleased to start the tournament in this way and really pleased with our attacking play," he said. "We know that Iran are difficult to score goals against so it's a credit to our players of the movement, the quality of our passing and finishing.

"At the end of the game, to concede two goals the way we did is not the level we need. We need to be better than we were today against the USA because they will be coming for us full throttle. We will have to reset.

"I don't like games that drift and there were so many added minutes in both halves. I understand games drift, but that won't be enough for us to progress. We still have a lot to do to qualify."
