Will Argentina still qualify for the World Cup knockout stages?

The shock result means Argentina are now far from certain to qualify for the knockout stages.

They will need to avoid defeat in their next two matches against Mexico and Poland to avoid the humiliating scenario of being knocked out in the group stages of what looks set to be Messi’s final World Cup.

There were euphoric scenes of celebration inside the Saudi dressing room at the Lusail Iconic Stadium after full-time.

Meanwhile, Saudi fans leaving the ground couldn’t resist winding up their Saudi counterparts, emulating Ronaldo’s most famous celebration.

However, there’s no doubt that Messi will now be even more determined to drag Argentina through to the latter stages of the 2022 World Cup.
