Terence Crawford has spoken about the details behind his Errol Spence Jr superfight falling through.

One of the greatest ‘what if’ fights in the recent history of professional boxing is Terence Crawford vs Errol Spence Jr.

It’s the kind of encounter that many believe to be the best bout you can make in the sport, but for one reason or another, it hasn’t quite come to fruition.

It appeared as if we were getting closer and closer to it becoming official earlier this year, and yet, both parties have been unable to get it over the finish line.

It’s a frustrating process but one that, as we know, is fairly common inside the squared circle.

When asked about the matter in a recent interview, Crawford provided fans with an insight into how the latest set of negotiations fell apart.

“It is what it is – I’m moving forward with my career,” Crawford said. “Me and Errol, if that fight happens, it will happen next year. I just don’t like the fact that a lot of people are blaming me for trying to make the fight. That’s about it. But my main focus is not on Errol right now. My main focus is on David Avanesyan.

“I just blame the business of boxing. I don’t blame myself for [even] one portion of the fight not being made.

“I felt like I agreed to everything that I needed to agree to. I feel like I’ve done everything I’m supposed to do as an independent fighter to get that fight made. But there’s only so much I can do.”

“I think he wanted the fight. I think he really wanted the fight. I think he still wants the fight, but I don’t know what’s going on in his team. The only thing I can do is speak for myself and my team.”

Crawford’s next mission

After talks fell apart, both men have now been matched with different opponents for their next outings.

Crawford will defend his WBO welterweight title against David Avanesyan next month. On the flip side, the WBC has called on Spence to defend his own crown against Keith Thurman with the hope being both can get through these meetings unscathed.

If that happens, a collision in Q3 or Q4 2023 could still be on the cards.
