Manchester City would be the “most obvious landing spot” in the Premier League for Lionel Messi, if he was to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract in the summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 35-year-old signed a two-year contract at the Parc des Princes following his departure from Barcelona in the summer of 2021.

What’s the latest on Messi?

Messi is currently in Qatar on World Cup duty with Argentina, hoping to secure his first World Cup triumph come December.

However, there has been talk that the forward could leave PSG at the end of his contract this summer, with Argentinian journalist Veronica Brunati reporting last month that he was set to rejoin Barcelona next summer.

It had looked like the four-time Champions League winner was set to join Manchester City back in the summer of 2020 before the 166-time Argentina international decided to stay at the Nou Camp.

But Jones believes that if Messi does leave the Ligue 1 giants at the end of his contract this summer, then a move to the Etihad Stadium is the obvious choice if the superstar decides on a Premier League move.

What has Jones said about Messi?

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “We'd all love to see Messi in the Premier League, and it's been mooted for years that it could happen.

“If it was to happen then Man City and Pep is the most obvious landing spot.”

What would the impact of Messi’s signature be?

Despite having already won six Premier League titles over the last ten years, Messi signing at the Etihad Stadium would likely take Manchester City’s global appeal to another level.

If the club were able to pull off the signing of one of the greatest footballers of all time, it would hugely increase shirt sales, and increase the club’s presence in all corners of the globe.

On the pitch, the 92 international goal Argentina star would present a great leader for City’s young forwards in Phil Foden and Erling Haaland and would improve what is already a side that has won four of the last five Premier League titles.

The forward has scored 701 goals and provided 332 assists in 853 club appearances across his career according to Transfermarkt, and has won 41 titles on both the club and international stage, on top of his seven Ballon D’or successes.

It could therefore be suggested that Messi would prove to be an invaluable signing for Manchester City, and a potential reunion with former Barcelona manager Guardiola could make this a realistic possibility for the Citizens.
