Chelsea are ‘having to consider’ who they want to be their first-choice goalkeeper amid links to Everton’s Jordan Pickford, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The England shot-stopper has been in outstanding form for both club and country over the last couple of years and has worked his way onto Graham Potter’s radar as a result.

What is the latest news involving Pickford?

Potter made the bold choice to reinstate Kepa Arrizabalaga between the sticks after taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge, but injury allowed Edouard Mendy another opportunity to impress.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea are ‘monitoring’ Pickford alongside other keepers as they still need to ‘make a decision’ over their current options in goal.

“Jordan Pickford is one of the goalkeepers Chelsea are monitoring at the moment, not the only one but nothing is advanced or concrete yet,” Romano said.

“For sure, they need to make a decision on Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga. I think they’re both very good goalkeepers, but they need full confidence otherwise it makes no sense to continue.”

What has Jones said about Pickford?

Jones has informed GiveMeSport that Pickford’s potential switch to Chelsea may depend on the player’s ambition and whether the Stamford Bridge outfit are fully convinced over his credentials.

He said: “Is he ambitious? Would he be willing at this stage of his career to perhaps move on to another club and actually try and achieve something in terms of silverware rather than just playing for a big club like Everton that don't seem to have trophies on the horizon anytime soon?

“So, this is definitely a situation that's ongoing. Chelsea are having to consider who is actually going to be their number one as we move forward.”

Would Pickford be a good signing?

Pickford, whose £110,000-per-week contract is due to expire in the summer of 2024, has leaked 303 goals in 213 appearances for Everton across all competitions, keeping 57 clean sheets along the way.

The 6 foot 1 ace has endeared himself to the nation in recent years, starring in a penalty shoot-out against Colombia in the 2018 World Cup as England reached the semi-finals.

And Pickford then kept the most clean sheets throughout Euro 2020, although he was unable to help the Three Lions lift the trophy for the first time in their history.

Pickford’s ability with the ball at his feet is unquestionable and perhaps the most appealing attribute of his skillset to Potter, but the Chelsea boss may need to be convinced over his ability to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
