The 'OneLove' armband has been the subject of great controversy at the 2022 World Cup.The captains of nations such as England, Wales, Germany and more were all set to wear the symbol when they took to the pitch at Qatar 2022.The armbands are part of a campaign “to promote inclusion and send a message against discrimination of any kind”.

What is the 'OneLove' armband?

However, upon the threat of sporting punishments from FIFA such as speculation that captains might be yellow-carded, the decision was taken for the armbands not to be worn at games.

It was a move that sparked debate amongst fans, pundits and reporters with some onlookers opining that spreading the 'OneLove' message was more important than sporting goals potentially impeded by a yellow card or equivalent punishment.

Nevertheless, the 'OneLove' armband has remained an important symbol at the tournament in spite of skippers such as Harry Kane and Gareth Bale not wearing it themselves in the end.

In fact, the symbol has been used by members of the media with Alex Scott sporting it on her left arm while broadcasting for the BBC as part of their coverage of England's 6-2 win over Iran.

But even non-player participants in the tournament making the move to wear the 'OneLove' armband has been problematic in some cases.

What happened to the Danish reporter wearing 'OneLove' armband?

We say that because, as confirmed by the Daily Mail, a Danish reporter ran into trouble with Qatari officials when he prepared to make a live television broadcast wearing the armband.

Jon Pagh, who works as a journalist for Danish broadcaster TV2, was getting ready to report on Denmark's 0-0 draw with Tunisia when he was approached by a Qatar official who insisted that wearing the armband was not allowed.

During an awkward exchange which culminated in the Qatari briefly placing his hand over the camera, Pagh can be heard insisting that he cannot take off the armband having initially asked if he could hold it in his hand instead.

It is unclear what happened afterwards, but Pagh kept the armband on at all times throughout the video of the exchange which you can judge for yourselves down below:

What's happened to the media at Qatar 2022?

It's not the first time that TV2 reporters have run into trouble with Qatari officials since beginning their coverage of the 2022 World Cup with a previous incident leading to threats to have camera equipment broken.

Rasmus Tantholdt was live on TV last week when security staff arrived on a golf buggy, who proceeded to place their hand on the cameras lens in tense scenes that left many people worried ahead of the competition getting underway.

On that occasion, the Qatar International Media Office and Qatar Supreme Committee issued an apology.

But with other incidents similar to what Pagh experienced showing an inconsistency with how items of clothing displaying rainbows, which are commonly symbolic of LGBTQ+ pride, are treated at the tournament, it's no wonder that tensions are continuing to rise.

The controversy surrounding Qatar 2022 certainly won't be going away anytime soon.
