Max Verstappen has suggested that he could be open to leaving F1 at the end of his current Red Bull contract, which runs until the end of 2028.

The Dutchman sealed a second world title this year as he stormed to the crown, leaving everyone else in his wake.

Indeed, it could be fair to say we're about to embark on a serious period of dominance in the next few years - though the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari will have something to say about that - with Max contracted for at least the next five years to the team from Milton Keynes.

Come the end of the contract, he will be 31 and will have plenty more years available to him in which to be competitive if he so wishes, though he might be tempted to walk away at that point.

Indeed, speaking to David Croft for Sky Sports, Verstappen suggested that he might be open to other opportunities once his current contract comes to an end with Red Bull:

"I've still got time. I don't want to make drastic decisions now.

"I want to do other stuff. F1 is amazing and I've achieved a lot, and I'm very happy and proud about it... but it's a lot of travelling and it's a lot of races.

"And at one point, what is more important? Is family more important, or is F1 more important? That's when you need to make your mind up."

Verstappen is a ruthless racer and one of the best around but it cannot be denied that he has a good perspective on things outside of the car and family is very important to him.

By the age of 31, he might be in a different place in his life, potentially with a young family, and we have seen only recently with Sebastian Vettel that that factor can begin to make you think about leaving F1 and pursuing other interests, as well as spending more time with those closest to you.

For now, though, Max is fully focused on maintaining this advantage he has over the rest of the field, and he'll go into the 2023 campaign as the favourite for the title once more.
