Everton midfielder Tom Davies’ knee injury sustained in training for Frank Lampard’s side “certainly isn’t minor”, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery.

The 24-year-old has had to return to England with the Toffees currently on a mid-season trip to Australia during the Premier League’s break for the World Cup.

What’s the latest on Davies?

According to Liverpool Echo, Davies sustained the injury to his knee whilst in a training session ahead of Everton’s friendly with Celtic in Sydney, and has had to leave the side’s training sessions in Australia.

The £25k-per-week midfielder will 'likely' return to training in December following an update provided by the club, but that still means he faces a race to be fit for the Toffees' Boxing Day Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The injury tops off what has been a frustrating season so far for the Liverpool-born academy product, with Davies having been unable to tie down a regular spot in Lampard’s side so far this campaign, making just seven Premier League appearances, none of which have come in the club’s last three games.

And Dinnery believes that the former England U21 international’s injury is “one to watch” in the coming days, with the fact he has been sent home not a promising start for the midfielder.

What has Dinnery said about Davies?

“It's one to watch.

The decision was made fairly quickly [for Davies to return to the UK].

So, we know that it certainly isn't minor.

“You just hope it isn't on the other end of that scale in terms of maybe an ACL.”

What next for Everton?

Whilst Davies’ potential injury will come as a blow to Lampard, it’s not as if this injury has come to one of his first-choice players, with Alex Iwobi, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye being the preferred trio in the middle of the park.

However, with a busy Premier League schedule to come following the Premier League’s resumption on Boxing Day, the former Chelsea manager would have wanted all available options at his disposal going into what is a precarious situation for the Toffees, with the club sitting just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

If Davies is unable to get back to full fitness come January, then it may convince Lampard and the Everton hierarchy to dip into the January transfer market, to provide adequate cover for their main three midfield options going into the second half of the campaign.
