Huge news has broken in the world of football recently that Premier League giants Manchester United may finally be sold by the Glazer family.

The Glazer's acquired the Red Devils in 2005 when they spent £790m ($1.34bn) to acquire the entirety of the club when they managed to squeeze out the remaining shareholders after they initially bought their first share in the club in 2003.

Since then, the brothers have been less than welcome by the fans within the club, with many believing that they weren't involved at Old Trafford for the right reasons and were only financially motivated.

This has led to years upon years of protests from fans which have all been conducted to try and force the Glazers out of their club.

Now, United fans, that fateful day looks to be just around the corner - with the club themselves issuing a statement that they are looking to explore strategic options for Manchester United's future, which indicates a major possibility of a sale.

So this now begs the question, who could be in the market to buy Manchester United? Here we'll cover some of the potential candidates.

Who could buy Manchester United?

To acquire an asset such as Manchester United, you are going to have to have some serious cash behind you. Here are some potential candidates that will certainly be interested in purchasing the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe

One that makes perfect sense from a fan's perspective, Sir Jim Ratcliffe could certainly be looking to be the newest owner of the red side of Manchester.

A boyhood United fan, Ratcliffe was born and raised in Manchester and has since become one of Britain's richest men. A real rags-to-riches story, Ratcliffe grew up in a council house but now possesses immense wealth.

He's already involved in football, acquiring French football club Nice and Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport, as well as cycling team Ineos Grenadiers.

He has previously expressed interest in buying Manchester United in the past, so this could be a match made in heaven at Old Trafford.

It's no secret that many former Manchester United players had a lot to say about the Glazers. Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and many more have always been very vocal when speaking about the club issues and how they could be rectified - so could they put their money where their mouth is and buy the club themselves?

This is probably unlikely, due to the mass amount the proposed takeover would cost, however not impossible.

Members of United's 1999 treble-winning squad members Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs are co-owners of Salford City, so could they all pitch in for a new, bigger challenge? Don't hold your breath on this one.

The Red Knights

Lord Jim O'Neill

A group of wealthy United supporters known as the Red Knights have been heavily linked with buying the club over the years.

Two members - Lord O'Neill and Sir Paul Marshall urged the Glazers to reduce their stake in the club to below 50% in April last year, so they do monitor the club very closely.

They were expected to make a bid for the club in 2010 as well that never came, so could this finally be the year they pull the trigger?

These are just mere rumours and nothing has been officially reported, but it'll be very interesting to see what avenue the Red Devils go down in the future.
