Kevin De Bruyne couldn't quite believe it when he was named as Man of the Match during Belgium's 1-0 win against Canada.

Belgium were extremely fortunate to win the World Cup Group F match with Alphonso Davies missing a first half penalty, while Canada were controversially denied a second before half time.

Instead, Michy Batshuayi's strike on the stroke of half time got Roberto Martinez's Red Devils off to a winning start.

De Bruyne was named Man Of the Match despite struggling to show off his world class talent during the 90 minutes.

And it's fair to say he didn't exactly agree with being given the award.

"We didn't play well enough as a team," De Bruyne admitted. "I do not know why I won Man of the Match, maybe because of my name.

"Credit to Canada. We could not get through their press, we did not play a good game today, me included but we found a way to win."

Remarkable honesty from the Manchester City midfielder. But he's right.

Martinez: Belgium must improve

Belgium boss, Roberto Martinez agreed with De Bruyne's assessment and admitted his side need to improve if they're to win the World Cup.

"Canada deserved to be better than us in the way they played. I think the result reflects the things that we had to do and the way we defended for each other and took our chance.

"It's a win and we need to play better and to grow. We've been here five days, we have to grow with these games. Many top teams are losing games. This tournament is going to make you develop and grow as the tournament goes on. If you do that by winning games, it's an incredible advantage.

"Today we didn't win by our normal talent and quality on the ball, but you don't win in the World Cup if you don't do the other side of the game. We need to be realistic, we need to play well but when a team can win without playing well, it's a lot to build on."

Belgium face Morocco in their second group game as they look to progress through a group that also contains Canada.

As Martinez said, they - including De Bruyne - need to improve if they're to go all the way.
