Liverpool would be pulling off a “huge coup” by signing Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount for Jürgen Klopp’s side, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 23-year-old is currently in Qatar on World Cup duty with the Three Lions.

What’s the latest on Mount?

According to The Telegraph, Mount’s contract talks with Chelsea have stalled, with the midfielder reportedly prepared to demand a £300k-per-week deal, with the academy graduate’s current deal expiring in 2024.

Reports in The Guardian suggest that both Liverpool and Juventus are keeping tabs on the Stamford Bridge starlet, though it is believed that the Blues hierarchy are still confident that the forward-minded midfielder will commit his future to the club shortly.

The same outlet also suggests that Mount is currently one of the lower earners (£75k-per-week) in the squad and would like a deal to reflect his contribution to the club since becoming a regular for the west London side at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

And O’Rourke believes that it would be a “massive shock” if Mount was unable to agree on a new deal at Chelsea and made the move to Anfield.

What has O’Rourke said about Mount?

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “It'd be a huge coup. Mason Mount has been a top performer in the Premier League now for the last few seasons with Chelsea.

“I think it would come as a massive shock if Chelsea weren't to agree a new deal with Mason Mount.”

Will Mount sign for Liverpool?

Whilst the Mount and Chelsea seem to have reached a contract deadlock, for the time being, it would be a surprise if the two parties didn’t agree on a deal at the end of the 34-time England international’s contract at Stamford Bridge.

The former Derby County loanee has scored 32 goals and provided 37 assists in 181 appearances for the Blues according to Transfermarkt, and it would be a surprise to see the club lose such a critical player to a direct Premier League rival.

However, with the contracts of Naby Keïta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner up at the end of the campaign as well as the expiration of Arthur Melo’s loan deal, Liverpool may want to move swiftly on a big-name midfield target, and Mount may just fit that bill.

The Chelsea star would likely get regular game time at Anfield, and if the Reds can adhere to his contract demands, it may be a move that the midfielder chooses to make in an upcoming transfer window.

Whilst Mount wouldn’t come at a cheap cost to Liverpool due to Chelsea not wanting to lose one of their developed talents, this may just be a deal that Klopp pursues.
