Chelsea have identified Robert Sanchez as their "main target" to replace Edouard Mendy between the sticks, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Blues' manager Graham Potter is believed to want a new goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge due to to the disappointing form of Mendy so far this term, with Phillips identifying Jordan Pickford as another potential option.

What is the latest news involving Sanchez?

There is believed to be a transfer battle developing between Manchester United and Chelsea to sign the Brighton & Hove Albion keeper (valued at £50m in the summer), with the Mirror reporting that both clubs are currently monitoring the situation.

The report goes on to state that Potter is a big fan of the Spaniard, who is being considered because the Chelsea boss is unsure whether Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga are suited to the style of play he wants to execute.

90min also identify Tottenham Hotspur as potential suitors for the shot-stopper, with Antonio Conte said to be keen on a deal, although due to his contract not expiring until 2025, a potential switch could be a pricey one, amid interest from elsewhere.

What has Phillips said about Sanchez?

His decision has not been finalised as of yet, but Phillips believes that Sanchez will be Potter's main target to come in for the out-of-favour Mendy, although Pickford is also an option.

In an interview with GIVEMESPORT, he said: "At the moment I'm told that Sanchez from Brighton is the main target to replace him.

"They have looked at Jordan Pickford and they have been watching him again recently on scouting missions, but at the moment, Sanchez, purely because Potter knows him, Potter had him at Brighton, he's the main target to replace Mendy."

Should Potter look to sign Sanchez or Pickford?

Pickford has been hailed as "outstanding" by England manager Gareth Southgate as a result of his performances for his country, cementing his place as the first choice between the sticks last summer with five clean sheets at Euro 2021, more than any other keeper.

Everton goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly also recently praised the 28-year-old for his leadership, which he is said to be "embracing" as he gets older, a key quality for a goalkeeper when it comes to organising his defence.

However, Sanchez is more suited to the passing style that Chelsea are going to play under Potter, and he is tried and tested by the manager during their time together at Brighton, a side who made more passes than any other side outside the so-called 'big six' last season.

Not only that, but he has also displayed astute goalkeeping abilities, particularly specialising in stopping crosses, stopping 8% per 90 over the past year, placing him in the 89th percentile compared to his positional peers.
