Carlos Queiroz confronted BBC reporter Shaimaa Khalil at the 2022 World Cup after she asked an Iranian player about the ongoing anti-regime protests in his country.Khalil participated in a press conference before Iran’s Group A clash against Wales, asking Mehdi Taremi whether he had a message for the protestors back home.In apparent support of the protests, the Iranian team had refrained from singing the national anthem before their opening match against England.“Your fans have been here cheering for you, your fans are back home cheering for you, there are also people on the street,” Khalil asked Taremi. “What is your message for protesters back on the street in Iran?”Queiroz, who started his second stint as Iran manager in September, apparently took issue with the question.

Queiroz collared Khalil after the press conference, asking her why she didn’t put similar questions to other coaches.

“Why don’t you ask the other coaches,” he said. “Why don’t you ask [Gareth] Southgate: ‘what do you think about England and the United States that left Afghanistan and all the women alone?’”

When Khalil retorted that she had asked an Iranian player the question, Queiroz was quickly shepherded from the room.

It is not the first time that Queiroz has clashed with the media during the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

The 69-year-old faced the press before Iran’s 6-2 loss against England, getting annoyed at a question about representing a country that repressed women’s rights.

“How much you pay me to answer that question,” he said. “You are a private company, how much you pay me?

“Talk with your boss and at the end of the World Cup, I can give you the answer if you make me a good offer. Thank you.”

“I think you should start to think about what happened with the immigrants in England also,” Queiroz added as he left. “Go think about that.”

Why are there protests taking place in Iran?

Protests in Iran broke out after the death of the 22-year-old Masha Amini, who was arrested by morality police for allegedly wearing her headscarf too loosely.

She died in custody in September after falling into a coma, with reports claiming she had suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and stroke after the police had brutally beaten her.

FIFA were urged by campaigners to ban Iran from the World Cup in the run-up to the tournament as a result.

Iranian fans have been showing their support for the protestors during the tournament.
