Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte will "definitely" have Alessandro Bastoni near the top of his list to strengthen the defence, according to journalist Carlo Garganese.

The Inter Milan player previously worked with the Spurs boss at Inter Milan, and they could be reunited if a transfer is concluded to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What is the latest news involving Bastoni?

The transfer saga involving Bastoni stretches back into the summer, when his current team were deemed to value the centre-back at around £52m, amid reported interest from both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Tuttosport report that Spurs have since reignited their interest in their summer target, however the San Siro club would be reluctant to part with one of their prized assets if a new offer was tabled in the January window.

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, Pete O'Rourke was also of the view that any potential deal will be hard to include in the upcoming market, especially given the fact that Inter have progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

What has Garganese said about Bastoni?

Garganese believes that the Italian will be one of Spurs' main targets due to Conte's history with him, and because he would be able to adjust quickly to the system in place at the club, telling GIVEMESPORT: "From the Tottenham point of view, I think a lot will depend on Conte, does he stay? If he stays, he will definitely be near the top of his list because he worked with him, he basically developed him into the player he's become, he gave him his chance and he fits Conte's back three on the left side of that defence perfectly."

Would Bastoni be a good signing?

Tottenham have, at times, struggled defensively this season, conceding three goals at home to Leeds United in their last game before the World Cup break, which nearly cost them, and they have failed to register a clean sheet since a 2-0 win against Everton in October.

As such, it is evident that they need new reinforcements at the back and their 23-year-old target would fit the bill perfectly, if they were able to tempt Inter into selling the 6 foot 3 enforcer.

Performances in Italy have caused the left-footed defender to be likened to iconic centre-back Alessandro Nesta, while he has also impressed in the Champions League, most recently racking up a SofaScore rating of 8.3 in his side's 4-0 victory against Viktoria Plzen, a game in which he also managed to get an assist.

Given that the intricacies of Bastoni's game are known inside and out by Conte, the move would make perfect sense, and it is one that Daniel Levy should prioritise in the January transfer window.
