Neymar has been ruled out of Brazil's remaining group stage matches after picking up an injury during the 2-0 victory against Serbia on Thursday night.

Richarlison scored twice as Seleção made their eagerly-anticipated bow at the Qatar World Cup.

While Richarlison was the star of the show, Neymar was quiet during his 80 minutes on the pitch.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar, who is on the brink of breaking Pele's goalscoring record for Brazil, has hinted he will quit international football after this tournament.

Is this the tournament that sees him lead his country to the ultimate prize and elevate him to that next tier that he's been trying to reach for many years?

Well, if that's to be the case he's going to have to do it the hard way.

Neymar was fairly ineffective against Serbia and appeared to spend as much time on the floor as he did on his feet at the Lusail Stadium.

But that wasn't exactly his fault.

Every time Neymar received the ball, he had two Serbian players around him. And if he even thought about trying to bypass them, he was thrown to the ground by fair means or foul.

In total, Serbia committed 12 offences during the match and nine of them were on Neymar.

It's probably no surprise that Neymar now finds himself injured.

With a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the match, Neymar was forced off with an ankle injury. He was seen in tears on the bench, while images showed just how swollen his right ankle was immediately after the game.

Neymar is often accused of going to the floor too easily and exaggerating his pain after an opponent's challenge. But a video has gone viral on social media that shows just how tough Neymar had it against Serbia.

VIDEO: Every time Neymar was fouled against Serbia

It shows every time he was fouled in the match - and it's pretty crazy. You can't help but feel sorry for the attacker as defenders plough into him time and time again.

How long is Neymar injured for?

Neymar is now likely to miss Brazil's final two group stage matches against Switzerland and Cameroon following a scan on that right ankle.

“The scans showed a lateral ligament injury to Neymar’s right ankle along with a small bone swelling,” said Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.

However, manager Tite insisted we will be seeing Neymar again in Qatar.

“We are confident Neymar will continue playing in the World Cup," he said at full time.

It would be gutting if we didn't.

Neymar is one of the best players to watch and is capable of producing moments of magic. However, Serbia ensured he didn't by kicking him out of the game.

While you can't blame the rough tactics, more must be done by officials to protect the very best players.

And Neymar is certainly one of them.

Neymar reacts on Instagram

Neymar released an emotional message on Instagram after news emerged that he was set to be injured for Brazil's next two matches.

It read: The pride and love I feel for wearing the shirt has no explanation. If God gave me the opportunity to choose a country to be born, it would be BRAZIL. Nothing in my life was given or easy I always had to chase my dreams and my goals. Never wishing evil on anyone, but helping those in need. Today has become one of the hardest moments in my career... and again in a world cup. I have an injury yes, it's boring, it's going to hurt but I'm sure I'll have the chance to come back because I will do my best to help my country, my teammates and myself. Long time to wait for the enemy to knock me down like this? N E V E R ! I am a CHILD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE GOD and my FAITH is endless."
