Gareth Southgate has once again incurred the wrath of England games.

The Three Lions boss was coming into Qatar 2022 under severe pressure having overseen a series of miserable results in the UEFA Nations League, so it was only inevitable that the criticism would creep back in again as soon as England faltered.

And falter they did with the spectacular 6-2 win over Iran followed up with a 0-0 draw against the United States of America that did little to get the blood pumping.

How should England move forward from USA draw?

England fans around the country and further afield were left with their head in their hands as Southgate's men seemed to be singing off 11 different hymn sheets, struggling to get out of second gear and ultimately never looking like ever snatching a win.

And with the knockout rounds fast approaching where much tougher teams could take greater advantage than the US managed, the time is now for Southgate to tweak his side in anticipation of the business end of the tournament.

It's lucky, then, that the Wales match presents the perfect opportunity to enact that evolution, experimenting ever so slightly to learn from the mistakes of the USA draw and set up the team for success in the round of 16 and beyond.

How should England line up vs Wales?

So, bearing that in mind, your humble GIVEMESPORT writer has decided to step forth as the saviour of England's World Cup campaign: the head coach of football coming home.

Jokes aside, yours truly has taken on the task of drawing up how England should line up against their neighbours not only to finish off the group stages with a bang, but also to set up the squad as best as possible to take the knockout rounds in their stride.

At the end of the day, it's only my opinion, which is no more or less correct than yours and Southgate will ultimately have the final say because - news flash - he knows what's best for the squad a lot better than me and you do.

But that doesn't make it any less fun or interesting to put forward your own team, so be sure to check out how I would line up England for the Wales game on Monday down below:

How England should line up vs Wales.

XI: Jordan Pickford, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka.

Should Southgate play a back four or five?

Now, the moral of the story here is that Southgate will revert to a back five when and if England play against the very toughest teams in the competition, but that's far too negative of an approach in what is a very winnable meeting with Wales, so the key here is finding a balance.

That's why my approach has one eye on the games to come by taking a more defensive and rounded approach in the midfield while still maintaining the back four which saw the Three Lions lift up the handbrake during the Iran win.

As such, the back five remains the same with Pickford and Shaw undisputed in their positions, while Maguire's status as arguably England's best player at the tournament so far makes it pretty clear that him and Stones are the nation's strongest centre-back pairing.

Should Southgate play Alexander-Arnold?

And while, yes, we'd all love to see Trent Alexander-Arnold given a starting berth at right-back, the simple fact of the matter is that Trippier is the more defensively sound option in the position, so it makes sense to keep him ticking over in the starting XI.

But what about Kyle Walker? No, don't worry, I haven't forgotten about him, but he's more likely to feature as a right-sided centre-back further down the line, so let's allow him some extra time to build his fitness back up for now. A cameo off the bench would be nice, mind.

Should Southgate play Phillips?

In regards to Phillips, however, a bit more of a risk should be taken because the Manchester City general's double pivot partnership with Rice was critical to England's success at Euro 2020 and has the potential to shore up the team against world-class opposition.

So it's better to test him out now when he can always be substituted pretty bloodlessly than when he's being depended upon in a knockout match, and it also gives him time to enjoy something of a dress rehearsal at rekindling that chemistry with Rice.

The dream scenario would be playing him for 60 minutes and laying the foundation for that partnership when Southgate inevitably moves to a back five in the quarter-finals at the very latest.

The Rice and Phillips combination also has the benefit of unleashing Bellingham in more of a Frank Lampard role so he can thrive in much the way he did against Iran, which won't be possible against Wales without extra protection unless he wants to risk marooning Rice.

How should England's front three line up?

Onto the front three now and I think we can all agree that Kane is looking very fatigued at the moment in light of a hectic fixture schedule with Tottenham Hotspur, so let's give him a rest.

In his place, step forth Rashford, who might not be as much of a natural in the position as Callum Wilson, but could be deadly over the top on the counterattack when and if Wales commit too many men forward as they try and pull off a miraculous escape from the group.

Meanwhile, I think everybody can agree that Foden needs a fair crack of the whip in Qatar as England's most technically gifted player, so it would be fantastic to just give him the full 90 minutes and let him try and prove himself as a starter for the knockout rounds.

Then, to finish things off, Saka should maintain his place on the right not just because he's been England's standout winger so far this winter, but also because he's the squad's most natural operator in that position.

And breathe. So, have I got it absolutely spot on or have I lost my mind?

Well, any England fan who's spent more than a split-second scrolling through Twitter will quickly realise that anybody and everybody has a different opinion on how Southgate should line up his side on Tuesday.

However, in many ways, that's the beauty of the sport and the debates that it inspires.
