England Women's captain Leah Williamson is glad to see some individuals opting to wear OneLove armbands during the 2022 men's World Cup.

Former Arsenal and Lioness star Alex Scott most notably sported the garment while reporting live on air in Qatar.

The presenter was pitch side for England's opening match against Iran and she wore the armband while delivering a short piece to camera ahead of the clash.

What is the OneLove armband?

The OneLove armband was supposed to be an addition to kits to make a statement against Qatar's stance on LGBTQ+ rights.

Same-sex relationships are not legal in the Western Asian country and 'offenders' could face up to seven years imprisonment.

The armbands feature the number one inside a heart featuring rainbow colours, which are the general globally recognised colours for the LGBTQ+ community.

England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland had all originally agreed to wear the armbands and were willing to pay any fines issued for doing so. However, all seven countries changed their minds after being threatened with yellow cards.

The countries released a joint statement explaining their decision not to make the armbands part of their World Cup attire.

"FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play," the statement read.

"As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games."

Instead, Scott has taken it upon herself to wear the armband, as well as German politician Nancy Faeser, to keep the message alive.

What did Leah Williamson say?

Williamson recently made the decision to boycott the Qatar World Cup.

It would have undoubtedly been tough on the Lionesses captain, who guided her team to their first ever major trophy this summer at Euro 2022.

England Women had support in abundance during their historic triumph but tuning into the matches in Qatar was not something Williamson felt she was able to do.

The Arsenal star stated she was unable to stand in support of the tournament due to the human right abuses and it being "against everything that I believe in, in terms of being as inclusive as possible."

Williamson has since discussed the likes of Scott wearing the OneLove armband in order to help spread an important message while in Qatar.

"I'm proud that people have worn it. I'm proud of my friend Alex for wearing it on national television," she told Sky Sports.

"I'm glad people are wearing it and still getting those messages across, because we've always used football as a vehicle for promoting those positive messages."
